New legislation: Expanded NSA secret internet privacy violation
Two new provisions in legislation are being pushed to expand NSA's secret violations of personal privacy on the internet under vague "terrorism" laws.
"An amendment floated by Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) last week would allow the FBI to obtain email records without a warrant in certain terrorism or intelligence-related cases — expanding of the use of so-called National Security Letters (NSL)." http://thehill.com/policy/technology/...
"The Obama administration is seeking to amend surveillance law to give the FBI explicit authority to access a person’s Internet browser history and other electronic data without a warrant in terrorism and spy cases." https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/...

To paraphrase Billy Clinton, if you don't want trouble all you have to do is follow all our rules.
But we will keep making new ones all the time, our minions will change some of them every day, and we will make so many that it won't be possible to know all the details until after you sue us. Then the court will apply only the ones that extract the most pain and suffering from anyone naive enough to believe (or old enough to remember) individual liberty.
The British colonists showed how to deal with this problem 240 years ago.
These bills in Congress are still fought over and must be, but the trend is sliding downward.
Then when a small group around the Bundy family snaps under the injustice and 'occupies' a USFWS parking lot, even though most oppose trying to use force against the government, ambush them on their way to county law enforcement to provide legal evidence against BLM and murder one of the ranchers who was no threat to anyone.
Then use the whole affair to misdirect attention away from the original injustice and accuse anyone who dares to object to it as being "anti-government terrorists". We can see where this is leading, in particular for punishing freedom of speech and terrorizing people with government surveillance in the name of "fighting terrorism". The real terrorists like the Islamo fascists provide a convenient hook for the rest, but don't dare call them Muslims -- that's "hate speech" and grounds for surveillance and punishment.
Edited: a simple grammatical fix
It makes me think about Wm Casey former CIA directors quote "we will know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American people believe is false"
Thanks ewv.
The terrorism laws are not vague they are stronger than ever, beefed up Dec 31st and still not limited nor defined. Those are different than the NSA's portion. One is investigation the other is action and the terrorism laws say 'suspicion of' is all that's needed.
floated ... passed around to interested possible co-sponsors.
No warrants are required in the other areas of terrorism.
What makes this different is two existing laws needed changes to suit their purposes. One for comunications by wire or fiber which requires individual warrants. The other communications is through the air or transmitted. The current situation is only those which originate, terminate or pass through areas not of the USA. This mean satellites and foreign countries. The basic law goes back to the beginning of radio in the 30's. It's illegal to interfere with electronic transmissions such as the little black boxes that black out about 50' diameter area from cell phone use which is a shame due to the loud mouth asses that ruin you dinner in the local eatery. and are another reason not to use air transport.,
The move to seek change has been on going for some years and been turned down so far as too far reaching.
The precis bare bones without the unsupported subject line hyperbole. .
Being pushed and floated does not mean filed with the clerks of either house. The rest is the result of having 'reporters' instead of 'journalists.'
