May of 2003, me dino retired from the Alabama Dept. Of Corrections. Between May of 2003 and May of 2013 until health reasons became a hindrance, I off and on worked as a security guard for four different contact security companies.
(I'd bounced around for the best pay).
I had a wide variety of posts that was quite refreshing after working for that state pension I still collect on the first day of every month.
Let's see, I guarded a number of banks, a couple of churches, a dangerous Birmingham truck stop chasing off drug dealers and lot lizards, a deserted downtown Birmingham bank building several stories high with a working elevator that took me to the roof, an aluminum plant where I had to hourly check on a furnace with molten metal when the workers were off.
The second best job was working for Wackenhut guarding a Mercedes plant.
I was also a Wachovia "vault supervisor" at a Wachovia money center where ladies pushed carts stacked high with paper money to and from armored cars I'd let in and out. the best job with the best pay was working with at least two other coworkers at a Wachovia data center with two giant rooms with lines and lines of with humming servers. Checking employees and authorized visitors in and out was one of the more important parts of that job.
I'm leaving some other stuff out. I've guarded all kinds of stuff, Even drove a car with green blinking lights at a ritzy shopping center.
So where did I never work?
Schools. Not a single school even existed as a post to be assigned to. I'm a veteran and for 21 years I received annual two-week training at the prison included NRA qualifying with an AR-15, a 12-guage shotgun and a pistol.
Now? Too late. I'm 75 and now uses a cane because I walk with a limp.

Well this was certainly dramatic, but I didn't hear a solution. I will take the liberty of correcting this young person. The first school shooting I recall was in 1965 in Houston (where I lived). An irate parent shot and killed a teacher. Result was putting fencing around the school with locking gates and admittance only by showing serious credentials. My son attended this school. Sad day for everyone. N

This was 57 years ago and it is still ongoing. I really am tired of this. We have rather strict rules in place in my area of Texas. You must pass a serious background test, including contacting the Chief of Police in your city of Residence to see if he will consider you worthy of buying a weapon and not some idiot running around loose.

The first one I ever heard of was about 30 years ago. It was an estranged husband who was there to kill his wife. He took out at least one secretary on his way to her classroom. The next was a similar situation. It seemed at the time that prohibiting guns for dv perpetrators was the answer. Then it was kids who had been bullied who were doing it. I don’t think anyone has said what this last guy’s reason was.
