The short answer?...they have lost patience, this was to be their defining moment, finally they'd achieve the full bore progressive top down marxist dream, finally destroying the capitalism that made the profits they stole to get where they are now...rich and in power...safe at last, the dumbest of the dumb, the least of all qualified...this is the success they sought to achieve these past 100 years plus...now at last...everyone would be their slaves.
Here is how I would tell that story...a story of faction:
You see, not being very smart from the get go, what else were they to do?, no mind, no conscience, no mutuality, no slaves to do the dirty work. They had to gin up the mobs, confound our language, our education, our morals and our children, the children when educated properly in their view,..would be life long demoncraps, pawns and sheep for their musing, for their sexual enjoyments and eventually their food. Very sick creatures from the get go...and they even lured the worst of the republic, a few in the GOP into seeking status and muting their enemy in the process.
Sly little buggers they are...
But, they forgot the one thing they had not possession of...conscience and a moral conscious mind; minds that could not be overcome, convinced or conjouled...now they panic, they feel the power slipping out of their hands and it's driving them to extremes. Extremes that will be their undoing...
The crimes against the Constitution committed by the Deep State (especially but not exclusively Democrats) make it imperative to "fix" the current situation by any means necessary. In the world of the founders of the US Republic, many people would be taken out and shot. Today, maybe we take their toys away?
I find it more bizarre how political parties change without any obvious explanation. I first noticed this in 2010 when Democrats wanted to cut Medicare spending. Republicans condemned it as consigning the elderly to bad healthcare, while Democrats said that was scare tactics because if you looked at the details they were actually saving the program by making solvent. 15 years earlier the parts made almost the exact same arguments, but with the roles reversed.
20 years ago I thought of Republicans as being more oriented toward bankers and the leaders of successful industries. Democrats appealed more workers who felt like they were being cheated by the establishment. Those roles are reversing.

I don’t see them staying the same.
