Tune in to 'Stossel' on Fox. He's doing a whole report on the militarization of police forces. Also, the interior US checkpoints. Well worth watching. It's been an interesting 18 minutes thus far. The videos that have been posted here about checkpoints, and their illegality are getting coverage now! Watch! Please.

On being stopped at a police checkpoint...

In all my years I'd only been stopped at one, once, during daylight. Then recently I was stopped at one in the night time. I had understood there were certain rules that one should follow when stopped by the police:
    1. Stay in your vehicle.
    2. Do not move your vehicle.
    3. Follow any instructions.

I was driving my pickup truck and horse trailer, and saw some sort of police action ahead. I could not identify what it was, so I stopped far enough away that I could successfully turn around if I needed to. Reversing direction of a horse trailer on the road at night is quite difficult.

I saw a lot of flashing lights. One was a light apparently held by a policeman.

It turns out that the officer was moving the light "beckoning" me to approach. Thus, in his mind, he was giving me a command. As I could not tell that he wanted ME to do anything, I remained where I was, expecting instructions.

The officer eventually walked to my truck and was very angry. "I could have you arrested for making me walk all the way back here. Haven't you ever been through a checkpoint before?"

I should have said, "Not at night, sir," but instead I said that I once had been through one.

So the rules actually are, "Follow the officer's instructions, even if you do not hear, see or understand them."

I later asked an off-duty cop about what happened, and he said that I had been "suspicious" by stopping so far away. "They think you are going to turn and try to evade the roadblock."

Heck, if I tried that they could shoot out all 10 of my tires before I got a quarter of the way around. Then of course all of us (me and the police) would have to figure out what to do with the horses.

So remember, Read The Officer's Mind.

What the heck! How could you possibly tell what he was doing with that flashlight? Plus, your horses might have spooked if there were lights flashing, an even a sudden siren sound. I hope he calmed down. Yikes. I'm glad nothing more serious transpired there.

We're all just revenue-producing livestock to these guys. Do what they say, or else... And, yes Snezzy - read their minds too.

The cops have been out in force ticketing speeders this year like no year I have ever seen, at least double of any previous year. On the other hand, my daughter was at fault in a minor fender bender in a parking lot, and the cops weren't interested.

This is why cruise control is a required item on any vehicle I buy.

Too easy to have your speed creep up without realizing it on a long highway drive.

Fortunately I haven't gotten a ticket. I do have cruise control.

It's funny, I have it, I just never use it. I like to feel exactly what's going on, and why, when I drive. But that's the little smidgeon of type "A" I possess. I think the only smidgeon.... ;-)

My daughter just purchased her first vehicle, a 2013 Ford Edge. It has not only cruise control, but a "gap maintainer" which allows her to define the minimum distance between her and the vehicle in front. Thus, much more control then the "old" cruise controls.

That's pretty wild. I would wonder if I was really driving the car.

Large trucks (18 wheelers) have had this technology for a while (I used to work for the company that made the components for this). The fact that it is now available in automobiles is great.

I look forward to the day when we no longer have to drive our automobiles. It will remove congestion and prevent many accidents.

I have done simulations that show that highway congestion is mostly a function of individual "optimization" and overall sub-optimization. If everyone just stayed in a single lane, traffic would move more smoothly. It is when a driver switches lanes for their own personal "gain" that causes problems. Those behind slam on the brakes, which causes a ripple effect.

Also the RBT, Random Braking Technique will actually cause terrible traffic behind the moron RBT-ing on a highway. And stay in the right lane unless passing! Pet peeve!! Get over! It's not a threat to one's masculinity! REALLY. Just get out of my way. Grrr

You need to view that as an opportunity. I now drive mostly in the right lane, and do generally 5 mph faster than the left lane. If those who want to park do so in the left lane, that's OK by me. And if ever pulled over by hwy patrol my response to passing on the right is going to be "officer, I was driving in the furthest right lane that provided unobstructed flow - the fact that there are idiots that want to obstruct flow in the lane(s) to my left is not my problem."
