I used to have to drive from San Diego to L.A. for business fairly regularly It was only around 100 miles to our destination but because of traffic it took 4 or 5 hours to get there. My son and I used to make up funny stories or limiricks or stupid poetry that we'd record on the trip to keep us sane. I was digging around my memorabelia box when I came across a tape of one of those trips. Here is the only viable result, a limirick that's also a pun. There was a young lady from kaeser Who was of enormous size, sir She drank gallons of beer And then tried to steer She was very much sadder, Budweiser.
Amazing how the human mind went from watching birds fly to flying in a giant A380 with 500 souls on board. Pretty amazing that we make model aircraft that we can fly with the wiggle of a stick
I flew as a passenger in these many times on secondary routes in the early sixties. Breathtakingly comfortable since we weren't crammed in like sardines in coach class where I flew then, as I do now. Slower, but the trip was better.
I actually flew on one of those only full sized. Compared to todays airliners, There was no coach class. just two seats on either side of the carpeted aisle. Food was actually prepared on board. The seats were what we today call first class. It was a real pleasure to fly from Detroit to Miami on such an aircraft.Sure it took an hour or so longer, but who cared? It was much better than today where you're just another egg in the crate.
Of course fares were about $300 usd round trip in the mid 60’s. Fares are much the same now in depreciated dollar terms. The dollar today has lost 90% of its value since then. If fares were an average of $3000 coast to coast , the trips would be a lot more pleasant now
True. I liked it better before air travel was mass transit. If they're gonna pack us in like sardines at least provide some entertainment. I suggest a stand-up comedian on every flight.
I no longer fly at all. If I can't drive there, I don't go there.I used to drive from Florida to San Diego every Summer because we had a condo there, until we finally sold. It's too bad, really, we loved it there, but we got out before Jerry Brown got in. Whew! Talk about aggravation. I don't know how you Californians can stand it.
I think there is a point to this, unless they shrink them so small as to get another across I don't see much point. I refuse to fly anywhere, if any way not too. Between people bringing all their luggage onboard, and cramming the overheads, to the just poor social manners people have, it is a torture session not worth attending. Free is too high a price to pay, if enough people did that, and boycotted airlines, they might have to listen to the customer.
They are little (well 80 CC isn't "little", but realative term) 2 cycle engines. I had the small one in a plane we had when I was 6 or 7 in Kalifornia, and you did the same thing, you had a battery (which may be what they were fiddling with in the wheel wells), heat a glow plug, and once started (after several attempts just like that) the heat of the engine would keep it going, almost like a diesel. We usually flew it on a line in a circle till it ran out of gas, about 10 minutes. It was cool as it was held together with rubber bands so we crashed it and then just put it back together.
The Lockheed Constellation, if I recall correctly that was the plane used by Icelandic Airlines to give very cheap fares across the Atlantic back in 1960?
Getting those little model aircraft motors to fire, I remember well. Nose wheel steering, good. Watching the propeller blades stop was disconcerting, probably an artifact of the frame speed of the camera.
There is a good you tube video on the history of it, but it was a project of Lockheed in the laste war years as a large fast transport, which they converted to passenger use at the end of the war. From the late 40's to the late 50's, when the 707 and DC8 came along, it was the premier plane to fly. There are only a couple left in flying condition, but probably the most beautiful, graceful plane ever.
Connies in military were EC-121 early warning radar, C-121 cargo. Here is a list from Wiki along with a list of survivors and displays: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockhee...
