Sweeping gene survey reveals new facets of evolution
Interesting stuff.
"Who would have suspected that a handheld genetic test used to unmask sushi bars pawning off tilapia for tuna could deliver deep insights into evolution, including how new species emerge?"

Maybe they have. Me dino only watches bits of that show when channel surfing.
I suspect considerable confusion is introduced by the lack of definition and use of the term "animal". It seems to be used interchangeably with the term "species". What about sub-species? Federal invokers of the ESA often abuse this lack of distinction of species versus sub-species to beat people up.
What about plant life? Many plants go way back or are these sub-species? Do single celled organisms have DNA? (I have no idea).
Consider this: where did all the elements come from? Answer, collapsing stars and various stages of decay.
The analogy holds.

"For the planet's 7.6 billion people, 500 million house sparrows, or 100,000 sandpipers, genetic diversity "is about the same," he told AFP."
And not all evolved at the same pace or in the same way. While this says nothing conclusively it does suggest a reevaluation of premise when it comes to evolutionary theory in as much as gradual slight evolutionary changes occurring in all species over millions and millions of years.
Starting at the same relative point in time, what is it about Man that makes him far more adaptable to his surroundings that allowed him to flourish and eventually dominate the earth? Why has man evolutionary process achived in ways every other species has not?
Interesting info to consider.
John Leonard Riddell was a capable American scientist of his time. Riddell wsa a botanist. He invented the binocular microscope. His work preceded Darwin's Origin and followed much of the same thinking on similar observations.
