Net Neutrality Gone: Am I Missing Something?
So Net Neutrality is gone as of today (at least for now, depending on what Congress does). Maybe this is a teaching moment (with me as the student), but I have no idea why this pisses so many people off.
From an article on foxnews.com: “ 'If you’re willing to pay more as a content provider [i.e. Netflix or Amazon] … then you can get preferential treatment,' Scott Vernick, a cybersecurity legal expert and partner at Fox Rothschild, told FOX Business, adding that those costs could be passed along to the consumer. As some have pointed out, this type of extortion in exchange for internet speed is nothing new for content providers."
Charging me a premium and giving me premium service in return: How the hell is that extortion? I voluntarily pay more, you voluntarily give me more in return. Just what is wrong with that?
Is it extortion when GM charges me twice as much for a Cadillac as it does for a Chevy? Is it extortion when I pay twice as much for a micro brew instead of Budweiser? Is it extortion when Delta charges me $1500 for a first class ticket when a coach ticket is $300?
If I'm a service provide of any kind, what is wrong with me giving special treatment to those willing to pay for it?
Help me. I just don't understand the uproar.
