"I actually made it through this morning at 8:00 A.M. I have a preexisting condition (Type 1 Diabetes) and my income base was 45K-55K annually I chose tier 2 "Silver Plan" and my monthly premiums came out to $597.00 with $13,988 yearly deductible!!! There is NO POSSIBLE way that I can afford this so I "opt-out" and chose to continue along with no insurance. I received an email tonight at 5:00 P.M. informing me that my fine would be $4,037 and could be attached to my yearly income tax return. Then you make it to the "REPERCUSSIONS PORTION" for "non-payment" of yearly fine. First, your drivers license will be suspended until paid, and if you go 24 consecutive months with "Non-Payment" and you happen to be a home owner, you will have a federal tax lien placed on your home. You can agree to give your bank information so that they can easy "Automatically withdraw" your "penalties" weekly, bi-weekly or monthly! This by no means is "Free" or even "Affordable."

I’ll never sign up or visit the website. These clowns aren’t going to be stuffing my e-mail box with their threats and fear- mongering.

guh.. I am also a type-1, I also spent a bunch of time off insurance and taking care of myself. These days its Lantus and Humalog. That alone comes to about 300 a month out of pocket. With some work you can get the costs down on syringes and testing equipment.. But.. guh.. it is a pain in the bottom. The thing is I managed to self manage, including finding ways to obtain insulin without prescriptions for about 15 years. Even after I got insurance at work I was so used to doing things my way they I didn't bother with a Doctor until the insulin I was using was discontinued. I am now, really un-surprised by those numbers. The sick part is that if and when Trigger finger catches up with you, or you end up needing an ambulance with a glucose drip one Sunday morning, or something else happens that will be a year where 50% of your income gets consumed just to stay within the system. Meanwhile 24% of your income is out the door by default... To make it all worse, I have no doubt in my mind that the ACA dbags will eventually stat setting limits on what and how much equipment you can use on a daily basis.. In some parts of Canada they will not pay for a pump, because they see even type one as being a problem you brought on yourself. In England they limit the number of test strips you can use per day. I use like ten per day to keep my A1c around 7... So, I will be doing whatever I can to remain outside the system..

I did go to the government site and check...the only thing they will do if you don’t pay the fine is hold up any refund you may have received. Since the government is all about giving away money in tax credits , losing this money is a real fear. The only way the information in this e-mail is true is if there is a particular state mandate for this person as well. The federal government suspending state driver’s licenses sounds erroneous.

Thanks for sharing. I had read in the days before Obamacare passage that the IRS could fine you, but they had no legal way to collect from you should you refuse to pay the penalty. Also heard the fine was to only be 1% of income in the first year, meaning $450-$550 given the stated income base. Any way you can talk this friend into publicly posting the email (Eliminating personally identifiable info, of course)?

For comparison's sake, I went to http://www.healthinsurance.com and see among the health plans one can currently buy there is the Assurant Health "OneDeductible PPO" plan, with a $5000 deductible, and 100% coverage after this. Cost: $165.48/month, or $1985.76/year. Caveats: Prices are for a plan available in my zip code. Certainly would be higher with that preexisting condition. Worth checking out anyway.
