What is Kickstarter?

Kickstarter is an online platform which affords people the opportunity to contribute money to a project and earn a "reward" in return. In the case of the Atlas Shrugged Movie Kickstarter Campaign project, Atlas Shrugged Part III, "Who is John Galt?" is the project and you are the contributor. Why Kickstarter? Why do you need the money?

The movie is actually already funded and is now headed into production this October. All additional funds collected through Kickstarter however will be put towards expanding the production, distribution, and marketing budgets.
The Atlas Shrugged Movie Kickstarter campaign is not so much about money though as it is about marketing.
There are two facets to that:
1. We know that fans of the book are going to LOVE getting involved in the production at this level - with rewards ranging from having your name forever etched on a "Producers Wall" at the Atlas Shrugged Movie web site, to actually being in the movie, we know you're going to have a fantastic time. Being part of Atlas Shrugged history is something we're all extremely proud of and having the opportunity to open the doors and let other Atlas fans in to be a part of that same history is really very special for us.
2. We're very aware that we have a built-in "anti-Atlas" audience as well. We know from our experience with the first two films that there is an incredible amount of vitriol out there and, we have every intention of capitalizing on it this time around. The day we launch the Kickstarter campaign, those haters are going to come ALIVE. They're going to come after us in droves attacking us everywhere online. To them, we say thank you. Thank you for helping us spread the word. We're looking forward to the onslaught of all those negative blogs, facebook posts, and tweets.

Isn't asking for charity antithetical to Ayn Rand's philosophy?

Kickstarter is not charity and we do not seek charity. We are offering a voluntary value-for value trade.
Ayn Rand had no problem with someone giving money to a cause they care about. If someone deems a cause worthy and wants to donate money, they should be free to do it. What Ayn Rand had a problem with is altruism for the sake of altruism as a moral duty, or being compelled, or forced, to "give." The Atlas Shrugged Kickstarter campaign is however a voluntary value-for-value exchange. You are not obligated to contribute.
"The fact that a man has no claim on others (i.e., that it is not their moral duty to help him and that he cannot demand their help as his right) does not preclude or prohibit good will among men and does not make it immoral to offer or to accept voluntary, non-sacrificial assistance." - Ayn Rand

What is the total movie budget?

The movie's budget for production and marketing is just under 10 million.

How was the goal of $250,000 arrived at?

With Kickstarter, it's all or nothing. If a campaign does not reach its goal, no money is collected and no rewards distributed. Wanting to ensure that contributors receive their desired "reward", we set the goal to a number we thought we could reasonably achieve.

What will the funds be used for?

While the film is already funded, final budgets will be completed after the Kickstarter project. All funds collected through Kickstarter will be distributed throughout the production, distribution and marketing budgets.

scott, can you explain what options we have in kickstarter to upgrade if available during the duration of the campaign?
where's my exclusive answer?
This is the oldest liberal trick in the book. What are we haters of? We love the book, and we did not appreciate, nor see the reason to savage it as was done in 1 & 2.
The list of things the people who were responsible for 1 & 2 screwed up could choke a horse, starting with leaving out entirely the early relationship between Fransisco, Dagny and James. Why, as it was vital to the whole story. I'm sure I am not alone in this, but I have read enough, and have seen enough movies made from books I have read, to realize that writing a screenplay out of a book takes talent and in a lot of ways is difficult. But why screw up the way Dagny and Hank found the "motor" and set out to investigate its invention?
A lot of the musings Rand puts into the thoughts of her characters would have been impossible to convey on screen, but messing with the items I mentioned, stories that have already been written, and could have written themselves, was beyond stupid.
If you people do the same thing in "3" you can write me off as a "hater" if it makes you feel better, but the reality will be, that you will finish off the trashing of what could have been a great movie trilogy, and helped drag down a monumental work of literature that should have benefited from a true telling of Rand's masterpiece
You are of course correct in stating there are many things wrong in parts I and II. I could name more, but you can call me a fanboy if you want and not a 'hater' at all. Maybe that is because the story and message in the book are so strong, or maybe because I see what I want in my mind as it goes along.
I look forward to a time when we can look back on this movie version of AS as the first of the great interpretations.
