It should be noted that at this time there is no confirmation of why the plane crashed. It's all speculation. The only thing known for sure is that it is down.

        Not logically possible. The MH flight would be "squawking" a discrete transponder code with altitude encoding and easily identified by even the oldest piece of shit soviet technology as an airliner. All international flight must contact the respective county's air traffic control system via VHF, HF or SatCom, before crossing the FIR, Flight Information Region boundary, usually 15 minutes or more before you get there. It doesn't matter if you are flying into airspace controlled by port-a-Prince Haiti, Cuba, China or the USA.

          I'm glad you are weighing in on this. That's what I was thinking also, but are the guidance systems in the rockets and launchers sophisticated enough so they would know that? It appears they thought they shot down a Ukrainian cargo jet, then the OH Shit! realization happened.

            This is a complicated weapon system. Unlike the ManPads ( man portable air defense systems) like the Grail or Stringer that you turn on, point and shoot,these systems are very advanced and it takes intense training to employ. Although a non maneuvering target, large target with no counter measures like a Boeing 777 is an extremely easy target to hit. Russia's special forces have their entire bodies figuratively covered in blood.

    FOX just reported the President was on the phone with Putin discussing the new sanctions and Putin informed him.
    Thank goodness Obama learned about it right away instead of through the news. Now he can go off for his fundraiser in NYC without any fuss.

      Yeah, they messed up their reporting on that...

      They never specified which President, and only showed footage of Obama on the phone. I don't know who Obama was supposed to be talking to.

      A very good question. Apparently there was no warning for aviators for that area, which seems really stupid since the separatists have been shooting down Ukrainian planes. Someone was really asleep at the switch. It brings to mind all the Taggart Transcontinental employees when the train was at the Taggart tunnel.

        I heard a report just a few minutes ago that American airlines have been avoiding this airspace for a while now for this very reason. What is with Malaysian airlines?!? Who with two brain cells is going to want to fly with them now? Of course this in no way excuses the human scum that were responsible for the missile.

      There is a NOTAM " Notice To Airmen" that advises avoiding this region. That is why all to civilized country's airlines ( North American and Western Europe) took routes over other regions, which include Iran, a terrorist state- true, but they like the money they get paid for using their airspace.
