" there are two less police in the world" -- guy in the article celebrating the death of police officers. It's two _fewer_ police officers, you idiot. Also, mistrust of police and other authority figures is more of a left-wing thing, if we had to choose.
That is why Ayn Rand and Nathaniel Branden settled on the phrase "radicals for capitalism." I can agree that the political "left" tends to question authority and the political "right" tends to honor it. But that definition was out of step with reality a generation ago, even if it has traditional value for analysis. Of course, we also have the authoritarian left that wants government controls; and the libertarian right that argues for freedom of choice.
Interesting. I'm anti-crime. But, I'm also against police overstepping their bounds. We have plenty of both in my area. I've had to say, "Whoa officer, I'm on your side." to get them to back off. A couple of years ago I had an nice impromptu meeting with our chief of police one night regarding our volunteer effort - and the very next day almost got tazed by a motor cop who's out of his mind.
I think that cops can turn bad if they aren't careful. It's a tough job, for sure. I'll never forget a few years ago when I took my family out for dinner. I was holding my 1-year old and my 5 year old was standing with me - and my lovely wife. We went to a little place near our house. I noticed three thug looking guys in a corner booth giving me the stink eye. I thought, "If these guys start anything with my family it's on. I'm protecting my family." I'm a big guy - heavyweight boxer. They left us alone. But, after the meal when we left I noticed their car parked out front. They were plain-clothes police, on duty. That tripped me out. Maybe they weren't happy to have an alpha dog come in(?) I don't really know. But, they wanted a piece of me.
Tonight, a friend is going to ask me to join him in the Guardian Angels. Uh...no thanks.
Depends what you mean by "right wing". While traditionalist mainstream ("Tea Party") conservatives are old enough to still be "law and order" from the Nixon days, I assure you that radical right wing, super-patriot, citizen militia, sovereign citizen, Minute Man, anarcho-libertarians, Christian Fundamentalist, and more all view the police as armed bureaucrats. While some of the super Constitutionalists do claim to support their _elected_ sheriffs, the city police are routinely denigrated, insulted, demeaned, and disavowed. If that "24" in your name means that you just passed your 90th birthday, then you might be one of the last of those law and order Nixon supporters. If you read here often - and you do post very often - then you must know that generally speaking the mainstream here is anti-cop. I find it unpleasant to say the least, threatening when you get right down to it. I recognize the problem: since the first police departments of the 1820s and 1830s, through the "professional policing" of August Vollmer (1920-1960) to the failed "community policing" movement of the 70s and 80s, the city police have not had an objective validation that provides integration within the community and the power of life and death over its citizens. In every state that lacks capital punishment, the police on the street can and do take lives, having more power than a jury, and with less control. I have no easy solutions. You can argue "rotten apple or rotten barrel" all day. The fact remains that a broad spectrum of "conservatives" and "patriots" are anti-cop.
