No matter what tariffs and other trade barriers Donald Trump and team enact, in the face of relentless automation the halcyon days of manufacturing employment aren’t coming back. There will also always be competitors, including American companies, who actually compete, who drive productivity gains that both destroy and create jobs. If Trump wants to ensure that US companies and workers lead the pack, he has to make America competitive again. Counterproductive mercantilist gestures won’t do it. He has to tackle multiple Augean stables befouled by the government he will soon lead. It shall indeed be a Herculean task.

- 1Posted by CircuitGuy 8 years agoI agree with all this, but I would add make America more inventive too. Competition is fine, but what really moves things forward is when someone invents something so cool that there really is no competition to it. I suppose that is a form of "competition" in the broad sense. When I heard the word, though, I imagine trying to make something a little better or a little cheaper. What really creates value, massively destroys jobs, and massively creates new jobs is when someone invents something that bring a product or service to a market that previously couldn't get it b/c of cost, location, complexity, etc.Mark as read | Best of... | Permalink|
