I'm working on a new novel and find myself in need of information related to light and electromagnetic waves being used for communication in space. Also, a bit of sold (quasi-layman's) information on technology used in space to identify objects at a distance (100,000km +). eg. spectroscopy, etc.

I am not completely ignorant in the subjects as I've done some research already. I do recognize that to write on any topic I have to make the practical use of technology in my story believable to those who actually know.
