I'm looking to buy a good general purpose knife - one that can do lots of different things around a campsite [should I find myself in one].

Anyone have any suggestions? Thoughts?

I have a Spyderco one-handed-opening folder that I wear [almost] all the time and I like it.
I have a Chris Reeve one-piece-of-steel [which is no longer made, too expensive] but it's really too big. I think the blade is about 12"
I also have the Gerber that is the copy of the Sykes-Fairbairn knife, but that is not a camp knife.
That's a lot for somebody who used to be afraid of knives!

star, I've been looking at that same Gerber. We have a Cabela's trip scheduled this week - sales..........

    Thanks, folks! Anybody else?

I've always been partial to Ka-Bar...pleasant memories :)

Gerber is very good as well.

Have at least 1 non-folder, they are surprisingly versatile since they are not hinged.

I like most of the Smith and Wesson knives out there, although of course they are not made in America. I consider them disposable although I have never broken one. Now if you want a serious knife, a once in a lifetime investment, then you want to buy a Benchmade.

    Sharp. Get a sharp knife.

    I like Gerber, myself.

You should have more than one knife. I carry two on me, used to be 3 or 4. A folding knife, a sheath knife, a Swiss-army style knife, at a minimum. partial serrated blade on the sheath knife might help.
