What is a LEPO?

Written speech and verbal speech are not the same. Presidential candidate Gary Johnson was questioned recently:
“What would you do if you were elected about a “LEPO”?
About?
“A LEPO”
And what is a “LEPO”.

That’s what he heard. Listen to the question. That’s what I heard, too. Unlike Governor Johnson, I did recognize that the question was about the struggles at the Syrian hell-hole.
For someone who may not be familiar with Syrian geography or the whole country’s current atrocities, it’s hard to make sense of the verbal question.
In print, “What would you do if you were elected about “Aleppo”? would have been a lot clearer.

Okay, he’s not quite as familiar with that mess as he should be. But what would Stein, Trump, or Clinton provide as the magic answer to solve Syria? Anything better than Nobama’s “solution”? Lest we forget, that was to draw a spurious red line, and then go golfing.
The media is dancing on Governor Johnson’s head about this gaffe. That includes a smug commentator on a media show who derided Johnson for his ignorance about the Syrian capital. However, the capital is Damascus, not Aleppo, though both are currently hubs of horror.

I agree with Abaco that I don't believe Johnson is a Libertarian, and am not a huge fan, however the way the smug reporter handled this was ridiculous. At the first sign that Johnson was confused by the question, he should have simply said "Aleppo, Syria," or "the refuge crisis in Aleppo." He was very obviously coming up with a vague random question trying to catch Johnson unaware. I for one stay pretty damned in tune to world events, politics, conflicts, etc., and I can tell you I would have not known what the hell he was talking about the way he asked that either. Of course I am not running for the presidency, but still it was a ridiculous question.

Putting myself in the same situation I probably would have responded, "You know what? I am much more worried about our own country's problems. We cannot afford to continue to carry the entire world's burdens on our shoulders. Not saying we cannot send aid, but the middle east has to figure out how to take care of itself..."

And that is why I would never be elected for anything...

Poor Governor Johnson. The media is acting like he got caught driving a truck over a throng of peaceful pedestrians. Actually, he got caught unaware by an odd-sounding question, and as soon as his questioner mentioned Syria, he responded, “Got it,” and offered some cursory thoughts on the miserable mess.

Anyone who uses speech recognition software learns that what prints isn’t always what you say, and even humans don’t capture unfamiliar words correctly. Years ago, I edited a major software company’s CEO interview for publication. I received a transcription from audio tape by a person who transcribes courtroom testimony. I snagged at, “Our current software development is calm and oily.” Huh?! Maybe that sounds right for law and politics, but not for computers. I read that text out loud, and it was obvious; published as, “Our current software development is COM and OLE.” Component (or Common) Object Model and Object Linking and Embedding. So, what is a LEPO?

Media acting on behalf of its masters, the statists who fear Johnson getting into the debates.
The statists are scared shitless that truth will finally be heard in a presidential debate from a candidate that is not controlled by power madness and who has everything to gain and has nothing to lose by telling the truth.

Sure are not going to hear it here.

No cherry picking just the facts. If iyou don't get 15% in these five and these five only your score is zero.

The polls to be used by the CPD in 2016 are:
      ABC-Washington Post
      CBS-New York Times
      CNN-Opinion Research Corporation
      Fox News
      NBC-Wall Street Journal

The only reason I know where Aleppo is, is that I had pet hamsters as a kid. Wild hamsters are native to Syria, and were first taken into captivity in Aleppo. If not for that I'd have never heard of the place before Johnson's stumble.

Okay...I consider myself a relatively intelligent man. I've worked in the technical field for over 40 years.

I would have asked the same question...what is Aleppo?

We watch the news. We know about the Ukraine, we know about Zika, we know about North Korea's "Chia Pet, Jr.". We simply might have missed one large piece of the puzzle, because we're not all-knowing.

I have to give Johnson a pass on this one. Hell...I might even give Trump a pass. Hillary would have simply stated he had a "short circuit". Does anybody remember the joke that when Bill Clinton was asked about Rwanda, he stated "I never slept with her"?

This was a "BFD" moment, in my mind, but while the MSM is willing to turn a blind eye to the Clinton lies...Gary Johnson's "senior moment" will be the news of the week for months to come.

I didn't know what "a Lepo" was, either. I do not have television, I only watch Netflix (don't like commercials). So, I don't get a lot of news and didn't know it was "Alepo" until I read this copy. I wish I had read it before using that hour to google the Marx Brothers.

There's an old interviewing trick called "a stumbler." That's a question that usually has little relevance and is designed to create a stumbling block for the person being questioned. It is a trick that is usually used by a biased questioner to show the ignorance of the person being questioned. With a little diligence, one can find many stumblers throughout recent history, that opposition parties can use against one another.

This is just the leftist media trying to lie that Johnson is an idiot, just as they did to Sarah Palin.

But our president really doesn't need to know what Aleppo is, because we don't need to be there!

This was a "gotcha question" similar to a highly publicized another same such crafted to make Sarah Palin look stupid about eight years ago.
Talk about what the Trump campaign may think of the "gotcha" is a wily deflection from who the media really hopes will--cough! cough!--benefit.

the best approach to the dishonest media is to ask questions of the questioner...Johnson obviously never participated in debate society in high school or college...

Just an attempt to undermine the candidate most likely to take votes from Hillary, and the one who has a philosophy compelling to many, but unfortunately many are ignorant of it.

I didn't know what Aleppo was either, until reminded. This is a misleading criticism, irrelevant to his suitability.

BTW, you can see Russia from Alaska. The Diomede Islands are only ~2.5 miles apart. Big Diomede is Russian, and little Diomede is US. they are separated by the date line, so Big Diomede is called "Tommorow Island". The water between often freezes, and you can walk between them, with a nice spring jacket on.
