We need to understand and accept that there are reasons why the location in the world that civilization supposedly began and flourished before even the Greeks failed so miserably in moving into the modern world. Leave them to their misery and let them pull themselves up by their own bootstraps.
Keep our ICBM's pointed at them, keep our Naval forces in range, let them know that if they ever dare to threaten the shores of this country that we'll destroy them - all of that, yes. But when you hear a rattlesnake brrrr in the weeds, you walk around it - you don't go digging through the weeds.
And take all the savings in lives and lower debt to develop profitable alternatives to the addiction to Mideast oil. Once oil was the catalyst to progress but the economic stranglehold of the oil cartel (both mideast and western) has choked advancement for too long.
Thanks for the incentive to get back to work on "Roarke's Drift".

Those are the drones we need; huge unmanned ships to move resources around the solar system, to establish coaling stations in various orbits around the sun for easier trans-system travel.

Unless you're armed with a shotgun, and/or are out hunting rattlesnakes.
Because, so long as the rattlesnakes live, somebody's going to get bit. And if you let the rattlesnake live, anyone getting bit after that is your fault.
