"Should additional Republican officeholders follow Mr. Rigell in backing the third-party ticket, it could help Mr. Johnson gain credibility as an alternative choice."
It might help Mr. Johnson, but it will help Hillary. If Mr. Johnson wins a few states he could through the election into the House for a decision. This would be very interesting to see who would emerge victorious. Logic would say the republican but in this current election cycle, that is not a given. It would get really interesting if the New Congress was to be controlled by the Dems. The outgoing house could elect Trump as president and cause a real uproar. Think of the fun and games the press could have with that situation.
Or the outgoing House could elect Johnson. Outnumbered Dems would have no chance to elect Hillary, but if their state delegations and a few anti-Trump Republican state delegations threw their support to Johnson, he could actually win. Farfetched, but so is everything that has happened in this election so far.
Even more farfetched but possible: Johnson wins no states. Trump wins electoral vote by a small margin, but several Republican electors defect to Johnson, erasing Trump's majority and throwing the election into the House. Then Johnson wins as outlined in preceding paragraph.
