Walt Disney World and Atlas Shrugged

I did an hour radio show today about Walt Disney which I think you guys will enjoy. As I've said before, Disney is the real life kind of person that Ayn Rand wrote about in Atlas Shrugged. Disney the man, the parks, and what the company stands for regarding capitalism mean a lot to me.

Walt Disney was always bigger than life to me, and I fell in love with the final Musketeer personally hired by Walt: Annette Funicello.

I have an interview with Annette, where she tells how Walt nurtured her career and kept her on the payroll after the Mickey Mouse Club disbanded (the original show only ran for 3 years, and they would recycle the shows). Annette says that Walt was her second "Dad", and always monitored her contracts. He convinced her to record songs on the Buena Vista label, and Tall Paul was a big success.

When Annette was signed on for the first Beach movie (not Buena Vista), Walt went along, as long as Annette never showed her navel button!

She did...and that may have been the shock that did him in.

A great, and loving, man. He was a child in spirit, and passed just that way....

The story you just told is one filled with "value" an element that is gone from most conversations today. We're not talking about morality--but value which is a whole different thing.

Wonderful article! Walt Disney has always been a favorite of mine, and the house where he was born is just a few blocks from where I live. I grew up with the Mickey Mouse Club (yes, the original) and watching the Wonderful World of Disney. I've never been to Disney World, but I have been to Disneyland and it was wonderful. Mr. Disney was indeed an amazing individual. Many thanks for posting this.
