more seriously, keep in mind that no one can be argued out of something he wasn't argued into. If a "bad feeling" is fostered in kids about guns, all the facts, statistics and philosophy in the world won't budge them from that feeling. I am concerned abut this, and many other things public "schools" do, but one thing that really bothers me seems minor: the bell. Have you been in "schools" when the bell rings and the kids just get up, gather their stuff, and walk out? They're conditioned - not only to "move to the next station when you hear the bell" but also they "know" that all work happens in 45-minute or 55-minute time periods; all learning stops when the bell rings, and the person who is supposed to be in charge of the classroom is not really in charge, because she's governed by the bell, too. I sometimes think that no one could be smart enough to design something so awful and evil, and I sometimes am afraid that I'll meet the person [or the Committee] that DID. There is not one single thing of value that public schools [and most private ones, especially "core learning" schools] do for children and/or their parents. Walk away from them, let them fall into ruins, and sow salt on the sites as an object lesson: nothing was growing there anyway.
Sage words, winterwind. Conditioning has occurred almost daily. It's up to parents to break that. By getting our children away from the experimentation facilities, (schools).
It has to begin at home, first and foremost. I have been teaching my children since they were little about the difference between rational thought, producers vs looters/moochers, etc. last night, I felt my daughter was ready for AS part 1. She more than met my expectations in her ability to grasp what was happening. But those of us who are parents are accountable for this. We can't be passive in guiding our children. Also, the fact that not everyone can home school, or afford private school, means that it is imperative we intervene early, and often. Let your voice be heard at Board of Ed meetings. Overman is an expert in the finer points of wrangling with these people. I use that word loosely. But it does begin with us.
I don't know if we, as individuals, can fight the following evil via Marx and Engels Communist Manifesto... "Do you charge us with wanting to stop the exploitation of children by their parents? To this crime we plead guilty. But, you will say, we destroy the most hallowed of relations, when we replace home education by social. And your education! Is not that also social, and determined by the social conditions under which you educate, by the intervention, direct or indirect, of society, by means of schools, etc.? The Communists have not invented the intervention of society in education; they do but seek to alter the character of that intervention, and to rescue education from the influence of the ruling class. The bourgeois clap-trap about the family and education, about the hallowed co-relation of parent and child, becomes all the more disgusting, the more, by the action of Modern Industry, all family ties among the proletarians are torn asunder, and their children transformed into simple articles of commerce and instruments of labour."
To me, this speaks volumes about the need for privately owned for profit schools and a reason to get the govt out of education.

Amen!
But we also have to get the unions out of the mix for any success, since the unions are dependent upon that very same government for their validity. We need teachers, and administrators, with no political markers to pay off....
Thanks. My own strike was to deny them my talents and my brains. Sometimes I regret it, just for the money, but only for a fraction of a second. Yes, my sister has a pension. I, however, can look myself in the eye when I look in the mirror.
I'm NOT totally happy about doing the same. I can live with it-for now, but as I'm transitioning looking for employment that I can respect, I'm worried.
Hitler once said that he wouldn't argue with men who disagreed with him because their children were indoctrinated, so such men were meaningless.
Rise and Fall of the Third Reich taught me as much about America as Atlas and Fountainhead together. It's not a replacement, but certainly a complement.

The NEA, John Dewey, and the teacher's union are just different types of the same cancer
