People who don't vote usually don't know the issues and don't care to know. I understand some don't vote on principle and that's fine. It's the people who don't know or care that I'd rather not see anywhere near a polling station. Don't force the moochers to show up!!!
There hasn't been anyone worth voting for (in either Dems or Reps) in many years. Voting is a complete waste of time, and a perfect example of Einstein's definition of insanity.
I sort of think we should make it harder to vote, not easier. The reason money in politics matters is because it buys ads. Ads matter for people who don't really follow it. People who follow politics can read newspapers and blogs. The ads matter less for them. I would love to filter out the people who vote based on ads. That would mean the thorny issue of keeping money out of politics without inhibiting speech would be solved.
The article mentions Australia and compulsory voting so I have an excuse to chip in. There is never a 100% vote, this can only be possible where votes are rigged. A few people do not vote, some from laziness, other from conviction, there is a fine (~$25?) which I believe is laxly enforced. The law does not specify that you have to vote, just turning up at the poll location and taking a ballot paper is sufficient.
Compulsory voting has points in its favor, I agree with them but I also agree with the opposing views. If it were up to me I would have voluntary voting only as it recognizes individuals right to own their time, and reduces government power.
