The US government is going to be smart about it. They will turn over the control of the internet to an unnamed global power and when anyone in our government wants to get rid of anything on the internet coming from the US there will be a little ‘wink-wink and nudge-nudge’ going on.

You see? Sometimes you have to give up control to gain control.

To whom should such control belong? The US management has been discredited by the Snowden files. We have lost any claim to moral authority by using the internet as our pawn for data drilling.

Jan

You are implying that a immoral entity is relinquishing control of a valuable resource because they want to appear moral? I’m not following that logic. I think they talk of relinquishing control because they do want to shut-down websites and control free speech. That is near impossible to get away with lawfully from within inside our country without drawing attention and ire from the American people. It would be much easier for them to turn over control to a third-party and let the third-party do the dirty work for them.

Immorality begats immorality. Now, that makes sense to me.

Of course the US wants to appear moral - whether or not they are has nothing to do with that. (I observe that most people who are immoral also want to seem moral - sometimes even to themselves.)

What I am saying is that I - as a person who cares about integrity - can not find a reason to defend the US keeping control of the internet. We have demonstrated to the world that we are totally bankrupt morally in this respect. I do not blame other countries one bit for wanting to distance themselves from a country whose security agencies, acting as 'advisers' deliberately endorsed security formats with known flaws 'backdoors' that the agency could (and did) exploit.

My question is genuine: Whom would you suggest to oversee the internet?

Jan

I say the overseers should be the American people via their government despite the contradictions. We don’t have any control over foreign governments. We can’t hold outsiders not beholding to our Constitution to be held accountable. The only reason why Snowden's reveals are a ‘big deal’ is because we expect and demand accountability in this country and we have legal options to force power to yield.. We don’t always get our way, but we certainly have no constitutional authority as a people over foreign entities. We lose as a nation if our country gives up control. Furthermore, our country leaders will be tempted to use that loss of power to wield the kind of power they don’t have over us now. For now, they monitor websites while we complain and argue our rights, but then, they may shut websites down with no explanation, no accountability and no authority for us to point to.We also risk becoming pawns of other countries wishes and whims about what is acceptable content. To give up the power and control over the internet, would cause the Americans to lose the ability to speak to power.

Besides, flawed or not: we built it.
