The California law regarding transgender students is good. It allows transgender children like Coy Mathis, Jazz Jennings, Nikki, and countless others to have the freedom to be their trues selves at school, without having to worry about the administration outing them or making their lives unnecessarily difficult. In fact, there are other laws in California already on the books that do effectively the same thing, this one just helps to reinforce those existing laws.

The claims that the bill somehow violates the rights of other students is nothing more than blatant fear mongering and false propaganda being perpetuated by bigoted, anti-LGBT organizations.

You didn't listen to the talk. You took only the part that fits your agenda.

I'm already intimately familiar with this particular bill (AB 1266), and I've listened to both sides of the argument already. The anti-LGBT lobbyists have no ground to stand on.

          Of course they do.
You invent "transgender", but a "transgender" doesn't exist until a surgeon does his thing. Just because some idiot thinks cutting a kid is preferable to counseling him/her, doesn't mean the legislature has to recognize this idiocy.
No surgery until age 18. Therefore, there is no "cutting a kid" involved in this. Also, there is plenty of counseling involved in the process of gender transition.

Then they should use the bathroom with facilities appropriate to their anatomy (ie, the ones with penses go to the bathrooms with urinals, and the ones with vaginas go to the bathrooms with the tampon dispenser.)
And force them to out themselves to the entire school? Yeah, that's really not a good option, and it actually creates more problems.

Not necessarily. You're operating on the assumption that transgender individuals always look like a member of their birth sex, and not a member of the sex they're transitioning to. However, that assumption is incorrect. Most of the time, transgender individuals are virtually indistinguishable from anyone else. A trans* girl usually looks the same as a cis girl, and a trans* boy usually looks the same as a cis boy.

Here's that picture of Jazz Jennings again:
http://www.aceshowbiz.com/images/wennpic...

Jazz is the girl in the middle. She was born male. If you saw her in public, would you have known she was anything other than a regular little girl?

                      maph,
I understand this is an important issue for you. and it was ONE of the laws discussed in the podcast. but can you see that you have taken over pirate's post? I have my own important issues that I would speak out on in posts, such as intellectual property and I understand your passion about the issue. but when you get multiple people telling you they'd like to see you comment about other subjects-consider taking the hint and post something separately. You can control the conversation in your own post if you like. What I see happening here is you're getting downvotes because people don't want to discuss it this much. We're getting brow-beaten. You can't persuade or educate under these circumstances.

And it won't hurt the little boys and girls who are using the right bathrooms at all???? This is liberalism run wild - the new law should be to lock any "lawmaker" up who suggests this lunacy. Next in line should be the people who support the "laws".

Perversion is perversion. If my daughter had come home from high school and told me about a boy going into the girls bathroom or shower room in the gym, I would have paid the pervert a vist with a shotgun, and the first round would not have been in the head.
How does it hurt cisgender children if they happen to use the same restroom as a transgender child? It doesn't. That's just blatant fear mongering and ignorance. Most of the time the other children aren't even aware that a transgender child is, in fact, transgender. They just look like regular people.

Jazz Jennings and her family:
http://www.aceshowbiz.com/images/wennpic...

Coy Mathis and her mother.
http://www.ugandapicks.com/wp-content/up...

Nicki:
http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,...

Look at the pictures of these children. These are the kids you're saying that you want to shoot with a shotgun. Honestly, you aught to be ashamed of yourself.

By the way, I should point out that you're completely forgetting about female-to-male trans* kids (girls who become boys). After about a year or so on testosterone, they just look like regular boys. If you insist that transgender individuals be forced by the government to use the restroom corresponding to the gender they were assigned at birth rather than to the restroom which corresponds to their gender identity, then you're effectively saying all FTM transsexuals, even though they look and sound like boys, must use the girl's restroom, simply due to the fact that they were born female. Is that what you want? Cuz' that would be the result of opposing the bill.

Also, transsexualism is a medical condition that a person is born with, not some mental illness. If you really want to have a truly informed opinion on the subject, and not an opinion based on the lies of faulty pseudoscience and hate groups, then here's a scientific paper that talks about some of the physical conditions which cause transsexualism and other intersex conditions:

http://www.dialoguejournal.com/wp-conten...

OK, where did this word 'cisgender' come from - LGBT? What's wrong with just saying 'normal'?

Besides that, mixed gender bathrooms are prevalent in much of the rest of the world. Been there, done that. It's not much of a deal.

Using the word "normal" would inherently imply that being transgender is abnormal. It's the same reason why we say homosexual and heterosexual instead of homosexual and normal. And yes, the word "cisgender" was coined by the LGBT community.

Personally, I think we ought to have mixed-gender restrooms in the U.S. as well. I'm not sure why people here are so intent on preserving segregation.

Newsflash: being "transgender" IS abnormal. Even taking your definitions into account, you're not supposed to have your mental sex mismatched from your physical one. Otherwise, transgenders wouldn't need surgery.

I'm for preserving segregation because I don't want women walking in while I'm using the urinal. WTF is wrong with you people who don't understand the concept of "privacy"?

If it were up to me to design bathrooms, the toilet stalls would be soundproofed, and each sink would have little walls like the urinals (usually) do. And there'd be a paper towel dispenser for each sink, as we as a trash receptacle.
In fact, I'd probably design the bathrooms to be rooms within a room, each with toilet, urinal, sink, paper towel dispenser and trash receptacle. And door with a lock.

Cisgender means the opposite of "transgender" in sort of the same way that "heterosexual" means the opposite of "homosexual."

Basically, if you're cisgender, it just means that your biological gender, your gender identity, and your gender expression are all in alignment with each other.

If they're not all lined up with each other, then you would qualify as transgender to a certain degree, depending on which ones were out of alignment, and by how far. ;)

I wonder how much of this problem existed 100 years ago and how much of it is derived from people not having enough to do with their time, coupled with the "there is a mental problem for everyone" issue.

Honestly there is no reason children should not stick with their birth gender in all ways while they are young. If a kid is found to have gender issues they can have attention paid to that with the understanding that something can be done about it when they are adults. Trying to compensate for their "feelings" growing up does nothing but cause more problems.

forget how it hurts the normal children. It's child and abuse neglect to mutilate a child rather than repair his mental/emotional problem.

Just cause the emperor wants to wander around naked doesn't mean the children aren't traumatized to see his engorged belly flopping down the street.

You're the one who should be ashamed.

"1cul·ture
noun \ˈkəl-chər\

: the beliefs, customs, arts, etc., of a particular society, group, place, or time

: a particular society that has its own beliefs, ways of life, art, etc.

: a way of thinking, behaving, or working that exists in a place or organization (such as a business)"

You and those perverts* like you are forcing normal children to change the cultural values that built this country. Cultural values that, in some parts, date back six thousand years, in others, date back two centuries.

If a kid thinks he's a girl or she thinks she's a boy, or they think they're a unicorn... get them to a shrink, not a surgeon.

*pervert - in this instance, meaning someone, usually a progressive, who is compelled to twist something just for the sake of inversion, or forcing others to change their values.
Just so you know, transgender kids aren't even allowed to have surgery until they're at least 18 years old -- a legal adult. So your argument about supposedly mutilating the genitals of kids is based on misinformation and a lack of knowledge about the subject.

What is he trying to protect her from? A real threat or an imagined one? If it's an imagined threat, then going on a rampage and shooting someone else's innocent child with a shotgun would be irrational and evil.

Trans* kids pose absolutely no threat to cisgender kids in any way, shape, or form.

I saw this same article and was chilled to the core. This is what that path of "tolerance for all" is leading to. I have no problem with people being what they are, but do there have to be laws to say I must agree with it, or suffer the label of intolerant? I just think the horse has been beaten into the dust.

Yes, and the way you use the terms make them buzzwords.

The great flaw in what you're trying to suggest is the fact that, in this instance, A, B, and C are not variables.
A may be equal to B, but A is *not* B. Actually, surgery to change genitals from male to female is one of the most ancient forms of surgery (though granted, modern techniques are far superior to those used 2,000 years ago). Ever hear of the Hijra of South Asia?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hijra_(Sout...)

And that's just one example. There are countless others. They exist in every society, and have since the dawn of civilization.

They were castrata if I remember correctly. I don't think I'd use the example of children just chosen at random for such a 'surgery' for the castle or house servants or harem guards, or the boy sopranos or the church, or the 8 year old Muslim girls.

Yeah, you're right. It was *so embarassing* when Neil Armstrong stepped down the steps of the Eagle, turned around, and saw a welcoming committee of Southeast Asians.

"In South Asia, many hijras live in well-defined, organized, all-hijra communities, led by a guru."

Segregation, much? Alright, if you want to mutilate people rather than help them, sure, mutilate away, and then they can go live in communities by themselves away from normal people.
Maph, as usual you managed to turn a post with a 55 minute talk covering many topics into your personal one issue crusade. Stop!

This talk was 55 minutes and your first post was 26 minutes after I posted it. You obviously didn't listen to the whole thing.

And in the meantime... sorry to break the exciting (not) talk about gender issues... the people of Conneticut have just voluntarily jumped onto the slippery slope of disarmament. Anyone who says "I don't think it's constitutional but I'm doing it anyway" is a sheeple who deserves the shotgun more than some f***ed-up kid going thru some sucky psychological issues...

Did anyone even NOTICE the destruction of liberty in CT? Over an anomoly created by a psycho? Wake the f--- up and get your head out of someone elses pants and on to whats important. Or get in line to be sheared... we can use the wool.

Alright, let's talk about the other six laws, then, shall we?

They talk about global warming at first, but make no mention of any specific laws regarding it.

They also complain about Home Owners Associations, and how the HOA for one of the guy's neighborhoods won't let him install a flagpole in his own yard, and also requires that all garbage cans be taken off the curb within 12 hours after the garbagemen have collected the garbage.

They also talk about Plato's Republic, and how Plato's philosophy is essentially a handbook for tyranny. Later on they also criticize Friedrich Hegel who essentially said that the state is God.

Anyway, here's the list of the seven laws in the order they were presented:

1. Connecticut law requiring registration of all assault rifles
2. Nationwide ban on incandescent light bulbs
3. California AB 1266 - protects the rights of transgender children in school
4. New York Ban on Horse Drawn Carriages
5. D.C. law requiring re-registration of guns that were already registered
6. Illinois ban on talking on a cell phone while driving
7. California AB 60 - allows undocumented immigrants to obtain a driver's license

Personally, I've generally been indifferent on the issue of gun registration, though I support people's right to own guns. But I suppose I can understand people's fear that registration leads to confiscation.

The ban on incandescent light bulbs is dumb. The free market should decide which products succeed and which ones don't. Trying to legislate success doesn't work.

We've already thoroughly gone over the California bill protecting transgender students.

The New York ban on horse drawn carriages is incredibly stupid. Horses have been beasts of burden in Western civilization for thousands of years. Trying to change that is irrational. I think this bill was being pushed by PETA, wasn't it?

Citizens of Washington, D.C have been legally required to register their guns for a while now, but this new law requires them to register their guns again for some reason. I don't see what the purpose of that is. This law makes no sense.

The Illinois law banning talking on a cell phone while driving seems fine to me. A driver should be free from all distractions. One of the guys says that he believes that some people can drink and drive safely, which is absurd.

California's new law allowing undocumented immigrants to obtain a driver's license seems sort of rational, but I can also see the argument against it. I mean, personally, I think we should have free and open immigration, but I recognize that isn't possible with a massive government welfare system in place.

So out of this list we've got four bad laws, two good ones, and one law which I'm not sure about one way or the other.

As a Illinois resident, I fully support the cellphone law. Normally I would be very opposed to this sort of thing, but it's gotten incredibly dangerous driving because of people who cant walk and chew gum at the same time trying to drive and talk on the phone.

I should add that I was involved in a small accident with a young lady who was talking on the phone, eating, dealing with a troubled child AND driving down the highway - yeah this is needed.

It should be noted that this does not apply to hands free operation of a phone. This is a caveat I support since it does allow the user to keep their hands on the wheel and it does also ban texting, eating, putting makeup on and just about any distracted driving problem.

Of course I won't be able to load mags with ammo as I drive to the range, but that's a small price to pay.
