Pope suggests Trump "is not Christian"

The pope says that trump is not christian because "He is erecting walls, while a true christian would build bridges".

Will this make conservatives (I'm assuming they are mostly religious) opposed to Trump? Does the pope even matter?

This seems like a fun litmus test - gauging the public by attacking the alleged "base" of their worldview when doing so could land them in trouble. I wonder how far they'll go for their faith.

I am a conservative, and former Catholic. I didn't like Trump from the start, for a lot of reasons. The Pope means nothing to me on this. If His Holiness wants to get into politics, he should run for office. He is now fair game on all counts, IMHO. The CC owns more land, property, and " walls " than any one else in the world. tr

Gonzotr,,,,Amen ! The Pope is not an American and has no business interfering with our politics. He would cry rape if any American politician commented on the disgusting , unpunished child abuse excused in the Catholic church. Francis better watch his mouth..he is way out of his league and his protection when he tackles a real brave man like Trump.Trump is not intimidated by blowhards of any party. Go home and tend to your own business. We don't elect Popes or ministers in America. I am hoping that we soon have our elected officials put their hand on the U S Constitution when they swear allegiance...it is far more sacred than the old superstition manual they all fawn over and they will think twice about their oath if they swear on something real.

If any religion gets involved in politics than their church should be taxed. That would shut them up.

Under the current laws, they do. It was enabled by the 16th Amendment. The only way they get to keep their tax-exempt status is to avoid endorsing candidates.

But regarding your original assertion, I would simply ask: is everyone (i.e. eligible citizen) allowed to participate in the political process or just those with whom you agree?

I actually am a proponent of Churches not being 501C3, it signs you on to the Gov. dole, IMO, and restricts your speech and activity. We run a Radio station, that could be considered Parachurch, but we run it as a profit company, not 501C3. My principles are intact. And, no, it wont shut us up. 501C3 is what shut them up. ( and spineless pastors and preachers )

part of trump's response was : "No leader, especially a religious leader, should have the right to question another man’s religion or faith."

I guess he forget he questioned Carson's faith and doesn't seem to accept Islam at all.

Many people think that it's not Christian to protect yourself. This is where I got into trouble when I was a kid. I'd go to church on Sunday and beat the living hell out of a bully on Tuesday. They didn't really know how to handle me...LOL.

How Christian is it to sanction the molestation of children? ...get a rope...

I don't think it really matters, unless he was Catholic and the Pope excommunicated him. Still, I think the general consensus is "bleah who cares". It didn't matter to Henry VIII either. Popes have been clashing with politicians since the beginning of the Papacy.

Walls are not just physical structures. There are many walls created by laws (not all good), walls of regulations and psychological walls, to name a few. The Catholic Church is champion of many of these walls that have existed for centuries.

I am amazed that the Pope made such a statement. It is true that Trump has spoken the loudest on the subject but so have many other candidates who cannot consider themselves outside of the Pope's condemnation either. And, if we really want to look at this from a critical point of view, then the Pope has, also, accused the US of not being "Christian" since the wall in reality already exists, in part, and always with intentions to complete it. I say the Pope's statement goes beyond offending only Trump.

I am finding this 'accusation' really amusing. While I do not particularly like Trump, the idea of the Pope choosing to sling a particularly meaningless mud at One Particular candidate is interesting. Let me see, the Liberal meda, the Conservative media, the Republican party, and the Pope all dislike Trump.

Maybe I am warming to this fellow...

Actually, while Trump was the interpreted target, all of the GOP candidates have promised to "secure the border," though Carson has suggested he would do it with a fleet of mini drones to surveille the border so that border patrol could focus on illegal crossers rather than patrol endless miles of empty border. Technically, I suppose that if you interpret the Pope's many statements as direction to national governments, you could say he's endorsed Bernie Sanders.

His personal life choice is for socialism - his right.
His choice for me to live in a socialist society - not his right.

I suspect that a number of candidates are 'not really Christian', which is to say that you gotta at least check the "Christian" box if you want to get elected.

This means that he targeted pretty much all of the candidates: the Repub candidates because they would secure the border; the Demo candidates because they are token Christians...except for Bernie who is a token Jew. Hmmm. Maybe you are right.

If one is Catholic and as such believes the Pope to be God's mouthpiece on earth, the Pope is actually eminently qualified to make such a pronunciation. All this did was reinforce to me that the Pope is merely a man.

As to it's effect, who knows? Only those who are Catholic would even take such a proclamation seriously, and judging by voting over the past 30 years, I seriously doubt they vote their religion. That being said, the efforts Trump has made to pass himself off as a Christian are even less credible than Obama's were. He couldn't name his favorite scripture story, he mispronounced the names of books of the Bible, etc.

That being said, it isn't Trump's Christianity or not which is important to me, but his positions. When he agreed on MSNBC that he was in favor of government-run healthcare, higher taxes, and more regulations, it just confirmed to me that he's a progressive. No thanks.

The "Christian" Vatican should be crammed with Muslim refugees and (and I've read about this) cleaning up poop of those who do not know what a toilet is for.

As well as the pope, think thy only allow cardinals and assorted kinds of help to live there.
There is plenty of space for Muslim refugees, though I think that will kill off tourism due to infidel Christian women being groped among other reasons.

Government and politics should be a “religion free zone.” But, the Pope (how anyone can call the world’s leading celibate “holiness” is beyond my comprehension) does provide good entertainment---as does Trump. What I like about Trump is he does not let his pompiness Francisco (or anyone else) get away with attacking him without response. I also like the media, establishment, and others hate him. Since he can’t possibly do what he claims he wants to do, he is a breath of fresh air in the political swimming pool and sure is better than the remaining candidates in the Big Government Party.

Neither one of them are...(in terms of the teachings of Jesus verses the faux organization and misconceptions of those teachings)

They are both bicameral tyrannical idiots, one a perverted jesuit and the other stuck in a perverted compartmentalized business meme.
I reference spiral dynamics here...just in case you have read any of those books...it's very interesting and enlightening.

The pope is an anachronism. I dont listen to anything he says. Its all dogma supposedly written by "holy people". I dont buy that stuff at all. He is a socialist, pandering to the people so they stay in his church and make donations to it. Always the hidden agenda with these power hungry people.

He doesn't have a hidden agenda, he wants us to return to the Dark Ages mentality of other worldliness and sacrifice. You can see it all spelled out in the latest encyclical jointly issued with the viros. To ascribe ideological motives as wanting "donations" is a Marxist fallacy.

I meant that he doesn't say he wants the return to dark ages. He spouts this socialist stuff instead. It's all about power and money in the end. Look at how rich the Vatican is

I beginning to think that the "Vicar of Christ" may have confused Jesus with the Morningstar. So, he wants to build a wall. What about the 50 foot high one surrounding the Vatican? As to people who have lost their Christianity - does that hold true for the hundreds of pedophile priests? He's nothing but a hyppoChrist.
