Missing from the GOP debate in addition to Trump was a discussion of the fundamental principles of government and the country’s—and GOP’s—real underlying moral crisis.

I argue that both Cruz and Rubio were right in the past to develop serious ways to deal with millions of immigrants who are here illegally. It's their attempts to deny what they did in the past that fosters in the public the view that all politicians are disingenuous. If they honesty change their minds and give good reasons, fine. But this sounds like Romney 4 years ago trying, without much success, to explain his flip-flops. Cruz and Rubio both have good ideas to offer, but they need to maintain their credibility if those ideas are to be taken seriously.

I agree with this article. As usual, they have to make an exception for Rand Paul, who actually does take a stand for limited gov't: "Some of the candidates, Rand Paul most notably, do offer a strong limited-government perspective when discussing particular issues."

yes. Rand Paul would be my choice out of this bunch. BUT, he could never be elected in this political climate of "entitlement". The country has too many statist citizens who just want goodies that others pay for. And, its mob rule here in our "democracy". I think that we have to play out the "venezuela" model before a majority of people will vote out this socialist crap

Rand Paul is today's inheritor of the Goldwater legacy, unfortunately. The masses seldom like to hear the truth. My very liberal PhD brother in law won't discuss politics with me, as he says I use "unfair" tactics, like engaging in logical argument and dealing in facts, rather than "feelings."

To a substantial degree I think Romney was right when he said 47% of the voters just want goodies that the 53% will pay for (paraphrased). I think he was low on the 47% number. I think trump is offering fewer goodies than hillary or sanders, but his appeal might be that a lot of people are very upset at obamacare and how THEIR premiums and out of pocket costs have skyrocketed. Also Obama has led us down the path to a bad position with regard to foreign affairs.

There they stood with the chief clown missing. Cruz with a magnificent resume. Accomplishments foew men ever achieve and he did it while very young. Marco Rubio, with odds stacked against him in life, achieved a status few can even aspire to. Carson, possibly the finest pediatric surgeon of all time. And what happens to them? They all turn into clowns, who by and large, miss the point. If you want to denigrate a good person, or even a great person, turn him, or her into a politician.

I'm disappointed to see Rand Paul drop out (though it may be for the best if it means he keeps his Senate seat). But Cruz winning Iowa is a lot better than Trump doing so.

On the Democratic side I'm very encouraged by Bernie Sanders' showing. In a Trump/Hillary general election I would have to vote third party, but if it's Trump/Sanders I think I would choose Sanders (mostly because I think his economic ideas have no chance of making it through Congress).

when you can say I believe instead of I think you will have an answer until then it's a search. third party = winner take all.

The one and only chance I see now is Cruz/Rubio getting together and doing something to they are more than just Rino enablers. otherwise....ho hum same same no change... winner take all and wait to see the new flag, name, and rule book.

The "moderaters" did not ask moral questions. Moreover, they treated it as a series of gotcha interviews rather than a debate.

Sadly, yes. But a sharp candidate could say as often as possible "You're missing the point. This country is sinking because too many Republicans and all Democrats has rejected the moral premise of the American system: We each have the liberty to live our lives as we see fit, dealing with our fellows based on mutual consent. That the purpose of government is to protect our rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, not to run our lives and limit our liberty because it's elected officials don't like how we pursue our happiness."

"the verbal gymnastics as the two GOP Latinos attempted to explain the intricacies of their evolving views on the issue, while they each claimed not to have evolved at all."
I don't understand why it's so bad if they changed their mind. It's worse they won't admit aloud we have millions living here as underclass, under the radar, and we do not have a clear plan what to do about it. I agree with the article: their gymnastics to try to argue they didn't change their mind make Trump's facile "deport 'em all" nonsense sound refreshingly clear.

Did you see Kelly's interview with Ted after the debates? He explains why the others get it wrong and that he had to bate the demo side to find out if in fact they would support the bill without citizenship...aka, amnesty. (That's where the sticky point lies) He never changed his views...same now as then.
