ASP3: This is John Galt

Ideally, the actor playing John Galt in Atlas Shrugged Part 3 will appear to have jumped right off of the pages of Atlas Shrugged. However, in our quest to find the perfect John Galt, some tough choices may have to be made. That's where you come in.

If you had to choose, which would you consider the number one priority in casting John Galt?

A. As long as the actor looks and acts like John Galt, I don't care what his personal beliefs are.
B. The actor needs to possess a deep understanding of, and passion for, Ayn Rand's ideas first and foremost.

    Gary Sinise? Tom Selleck (possibly older than you are thinking of), Dean Cain, Kevin Sorbo, James Caviezel, or, if he were an actor, Dr. Ben Carson

      Gary Sinise and James Caviezel could look the part. Brad Pitt could look the part as well. Bradley Cooper might make the list of look alike images in my mind as well. If they don't BELIEVE in Ayn Rand's philosophy they should at least be able to act well enough to make the audience believe that they do. Reading the book is a super sound idea...

    I wish Jsu Garcia had the look for John Gault he had the presence sensuality and confidence John Gault will need. I have racked my brain for an actor that can pull it off and I keep thinking of John Schnieder but he might be a little old for the part. Stick with someone that can bring the passion that Jsu Garcia brought and you have him. He has to be the kind of guy a women wants to surrender to because he acts as a man that treats women like he wants to take care of them.

    This is Atlas Shrugged we need the person that adds the most value to the movie. So he has to be a confident strong gentlemanly take charge hot kind of guy that makes women want to surrender and men want to be.

    B. I don't want to see an actor promo the movie by saying "I may not believe in the ideas but I needed the work." Too often libs try to play conservatives. We should have plenty of Ayn Rand fans to choose from.

    Right #1 post khalling. I was going to say both A and B or Neither of these. So if Snowden is out, just don't get the outspoken liberal or a wimpy one who could be persuaded to sabatoge the movie. I hope you have some feelers out in Movieland. You never know who might be out there really wanting to play the part, but not wanting to make the first move in Liberalland. Good luck.

    Ralph Fienes would be good. Another who might be good as far as screen presence would be Clive Owen. I saw him in "Hemingway and Gehlhorn" He had a great command of the screen, very strong appearance, forceful, played Hemingway as a strong man's man. I don't know what his beliefs are but not too many conservatives in Hollywood.

    B. Reading the seventy-page soliloquy of "Who is John Galt" can give a glimpse of the difficulty for any writer, but putting those judiciously selected words into action will be more demanding. The heart, and a freedom loving one at, that is required to interpret the role.

    I agree that Jim Caviezel has to be #1 choice, based on quality of acting, appearance, basic philosophy. He has a stoic, self assured demeanor that fits the role.

    Oh- and Please- ENOUGH of the calls for Gary Sinese and Jim Caviezel. Galt is the IDEAL MAN. He is an Adonis. Jim and Gary, as fine of actors as they may be, are NOT. Trust me, as an appreciator of fine man-flesh, Aaron Eckhart is the man for the role. Yes, I know the producers can't afford him, but a girl (especially one who has waited 20 years for a movie to come out) can only hope they will see the light.

    C. The actor needs to possess the "right" mindset, even if they never heard of Ayn Rand. They need to believe these principles to the core of their being.

    For me: (A) is a sell-out, and does not befit the dignity of the cause. (B) is good, but might be too limiting. (C) give us credibility.

    Go back and watch The Shield. The development of David Rees Snell of Ronnie from a back bencher to the co-lead in the last few episodes is one of the best characters on the past 10 years.
    He had a great turn in The Unit as well. If we want this movie to be a moderate success, acting and writing will have to rule the day.
    And we have to go pack the theatres.

    You know, if you think outside the box a little, you might expand the audience, and interest in the movie. Why does John Galt have to be a white guy? How about Denzel Washington for the part, or is he is too old, maybe Shemar Moore?

      Even though that is against the novel as written, it might have been OK if done from Part 1.

      As of now, we have two parts 'in the can', and there is NO way that the part can take such a radical shift. Nothing would be believable....

    Dittos on Gary Sinese. He is the absolute first one to come to my mind. I actually can't even think of anyone else quite so suited to this role.
