Live within your means or perish. Screw them let them go belly up. The politicians created it NOW let them start cutting all services and Gov't wages and pensions and healthcare to fix it.

This after they have spent years ruining the economy of the province and lying about it. Typical idiotic liberal government. Only understand one thing. Spend as much as you don’t have and more.

Just when you thought nothing more could be said...Boat people from Canada BC, Alberta, Yukon, Saskatchewan, Quebec, Newfoundland AND Ontario are docked around us now. I asked their take on the Ontario situation. Went like this...

"Ontario has a lot of rich people. They are all government employees. When one of their unions screwed up investments for the retirement fund the Government ....mostly from Ontario did a bail out. The rest of Canada paid for it. This is the same method." The rest aqreed including the Ontarians who added..."did you notice the nicest boats belong to former government employees provincial or national?"

They asked me what I thought of the Presidential race in the USA? "My party doesn't get to have candidates. I'm a Constitutionalist. I'm now an expat. My country disappeared. How do you see the elections?

"You have two front runners, If you compared them to 20th century one would be named Stalin and the other Adolf."

"Actually? It's scary everything is all leftist."

The Ontarians didn't agree. "What's wrong with socialism? We didn't do so badly?"

Like the Europeans a lot from East Europe this year, the Down Unders the biggest comment has to with USA's new status as a police state.

But the most cutting remark was "You know why Obama is letting in all the Muslims? Needs people to staff the DHS. We just don't feel safe anymore.

All the remarks weren't in that direction but one was telling. "US won the Socialist Wars of then 20th Century then gave first place to China.

Finally "Who are you voting for??

"None of the above. Besides it's not my country anymore."

    Unfettered world opinion

Those type of remarks are commonplace and have been for the last five years.

Every year people donate a million or so to the U.S. treasury. For some reason 2012 was a banner year with 7.7 million donated. You can pay on your tax form or there is a web site pay.gov where you can pay online.

Just in case anyone on the gulch feels like giving the government some money.

Well, well, they're finally running out of other people's money. Just as Thatcher predicted.
I'll have to ask my Canadian relatives if any of them are going to pony up.

I'm intrigued by the possibility of no compulsory taxes, of gov't somehow being funded all by fees and voluntary donations.

I know that's not what's happening here, but if people will pay voluntarily, does that mean maybe a society could exist with a functioning gov't but not taxes?

This would be a great question for the Gulch.

One scenario I could see happening here is enforcement via peer group pressure. Since we see how well that has worked with the advancement of the PC culture, it believe it would work well with taxes.

The government my actually profit beyond their dreams as the people fall all over themselves for the bragging rights of giving the most. :)

CircuitGuy: (somebody told me how to reply to
specific people, but I forgot): If you shrink the
government down to its proper functions (which
are mighty few; to protect people from force [includ-
ing fraud] and violence, e.g., police, law courts, legislature, executive, military forces,
    registration of property, including intellectual
property, that it be not stolen, registering of
    contracts, including marriage contracts, that
they be not violated, and that's about all), to
finance these you could have contract premiums
(as Ayn Rand suggested), a % on the value
concerned in the contract, if you want it to be
enforceable in court; lotteries; payment on pat-
ents & copyrights, by % (if you don't want to
pay, don't expect the government to protect it),
and--something like the present sales tax in
stores, but make it voluntary. If the store owner
refuses to pay it, don't issue him his Law En-
forcement sticker to put in the window; let him
know that if a robber comes in and he calls 911,
no police will come to that address. If he comes
to the store, and finds that it has been burglar-
ized during the night, the cops won't investigate
the crime, as he has been on record as having
refused to finance his protection. (As to buying
things online, you could have a similar arrange-
ment regarding protecting that website from i-
dentity theft). But mostly people would not be
unwilling to pay Law Enforcement Fee, as it
would not be going for a whole lot of garbage,
as taxes do now, in my utopian Republic of
    Laissez-Faire.

Ha- ha. My response would be, stop spending
so much. Abolish government departments. Shrink
the size of government. Start doing that, and if
you keep it up long enough, and show you are sin-
cere, maybe then I'll send you a buck or two. If
    not, forget it.
