Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit, my best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low-stress, non-addictive, gender-neutral celebration of the winter solstice holiday (not to be confused as implying a 'holy day'), practiced within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, or secular practice of your choice, with respect for the religious/secular persuasion and/or traditions of others, or for their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all. I also wish you a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2016, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make America great. Not to imply that America is necessarily greater than any other country, nor the only America in the Western Hemisphere . Also, this wish is made without regard to the race, creed, color, age, physical ability, religious faith or sexual preference of the wishee. . Merry PC! -- john

Because Christmas is not a sanctioned observance by the PC crowd. The PC crowd would like to regulate Christmas to someplace way below Ground Hog's Day. However, because Christmas means a lot to me, I do want to say to everyone in The Gulch, "Merry Christmas!"

good for you. even Ayn Rand liked Christmas. I grew up in Brooklyn home to 2 million jews and who knows how many Christians, many of my friends are christians and when it came to this time of year we always respected them and said merry Christmas. I have been an atheist since the age of 15 but that didn't stop me to this day saying merry Christmas to one and all.

What a very nice thing for you to do. I went to a predominately Jewish high school. There was never a problem with observing Christmas. We even had a Christmas tree in the main entrance way. The Jewish kids helped decorate the tree. It makes the heart sad to think that our country stands for freedom from religion instead of freedom of religion.

Unfortunately those who walk the halls of congress, which is all they do, are deaf, dumb and blind to what we are all about, that is those of us who were born to people who came here 100 + years ago and built the country that these functioning illiterates are now successfully destroying.

The problem is that we keep expecting the politicians to "do something" to solve our problems. As long as we keep asking them to do so, they will keep finding things to "solve."

Funny thing, is that like drug companies, they dont seem to find cures for problems or diseases, just "treatments" that make them all money and give them power.

perhaps if we aren't willing to ask for something more specific we should just ask them to do nothing. Sometimes i do wish they really would shut down government. Starting with the Congress.

Well, freedom FROM the control of religion is not a bad thing, in my humble view. I dont care about people believing what they want to believe, but I do think its bad when they dont want me to have the same rights.

That makes me very leery of Mormons, Muslims, and some of the other cults that think I should believe their dogmas.

I think a lot of religion is just an excuse to live without thinking- just take what the leader says blindly.

That said, SOME of the dogma is not bad really. Its just that there is no accountability contained in it when it no longer applies.

The idea of having good will to other humans is indeed a good thing, and thats what Christmas is all about. Forget the religious nonsense. Thats why Ayn Rand liked Christmas. We should give it another name though.

My brand of hard-core atheism generally induces me to start with, "Happy Holidays." If someone wishes me "Merry Christmas," I respond, "And to you, too, and a Happy New Year." Occasionally, I open with, "Happy Humbug and a prosperous New Year!" The recipients always treat that as humorous and offer a cheery response. Circa Christmas Eve, I'll open with a straight, "Merry Christmas."
In a similar vein, when I sneeze and someone offers, "God bless you," I politely respond, "Thank you," though not really expecting a deity to intercede on my behalf. (Grammatically, commanding a third-person god to bless my health is a jussive subjunctive.)
When I sneeze and nobody says anything, I bless myself (as though that might help) with, "Bless me—Thank me—I'm welcome." (Mustn't be impolite, especially to myself.)

And for all Erisians and Zaroastrian Tree Worshipers I'll say, same to you. May you prosper in good health and never need anything that you can't do for yourself.

Well, I am not a Christian, but I celebrate it as a
sort of winter solstice festival. I understand that it
was a pagan holiday to start with. I believe that the
tree was originally a sort of north European pagan
symbol. But I usually call it "Christmas" because that's the name by which it is generally
known, and when I speak I wish to be under-
stood. During my childhood and adolescence, as
I recall, it was mainly the ultra-religious people
who complained about Christmas, because of
the secular aspects, the tree, Santa Claus, the
presents, the "commercialization", etc. And they
seemed to be accusing unbelievers of somehow
having stolen the holiday, but then I found out
there had been a celebration long before Chris-
tianity. But I enjoy the season as a sort of
kaleidoscope (sp?) of celebration, including the
    carols, "Handel's Messiah", Dickens's Christ-
    mas Carol
(though I'm something of a Scrooge
    myself), "It's a Wonderful Life" (though I don't
agree with George Bailey's giving up his person-
al ambition to stay in that town and take care of
    those people) etc.

I celebrate by seeing my favorite holiday movie -- Mel Brooks' Silent Movie.

"There are two S's in Christmas, and they're both dollar signs!"

To all you over sessive types, Jesus wasn't born on December 25. There isn't an accurate record of his birth. However, his death and resurrection is well documented Merry Christmas to all.
