[Ask the Gulch] OK folks, help me to understand this 'safe space' business.

As I seem to be a bit euphemistically challenged these days, it seems to me to be nothing more than some strange variant of prior restraint censorship regarding whomever the victim de jour.

Am I correct or do I owe them an apology?

"I prefer dangerous liberty over peaceful slavery." Thomas Jefferson
The root problem, IMO, is too many people have forgotten what it means to be free. It takes courage, self-responsibility, and independent thinking. When other people have that (not just you) it means dealing with unpleasant disagreements.

+1 "too many people have forgotten what it means to be free. It takes courage, self-responsibility, and independent thinking. When other people have that (not just you) it means dealing with unpleasant disagreements. " Very well said. May I quote you?

Safe space is something parents try to provide for infants and very young children. Adults realize that immunity from harm only results from being exposed to harmful and dangerous environments for that is how the immune system is developed and strengthened. Modern universities are turning out students that are prepubescent at best and infantile at worst. These are the people that an invader will have to conquer. The invader will have no problem.

I think they wish to return to the womb where only the one who you rely on for everything, can hurt you. Unfortunately, the "mother" they want to rely on smokes, drinks, shoots heroin and has indiscriminate sex with multiple partners with STD's (and a really lousy diet).

Salty; You're right as far as you go, but you need to expand your description to include any socialist/statist, anti-white male, and anti-liberty group. I'm waiting for a white mail, pro-liberty group to demand their own 'safe space'.

The problem Zenphamy, is that the Social Justice Warriors will claim that White male pro-liberty group already has it "safe space" called the United States because the US is a racist, homophobic, transphobic, mysogynist society (as well as any other "ist" I may have missed). And White males need to check their privledge. I mean where can these crybabies get to be the center of their own echo chambers than in the one place where critical debates should be at its most free. We wouldn't want to expose them to any other points of view that might shatter their precious little, tiny self esteem because we all know that the real world is so forgiving and coddling to these morons. Or at least it is getting there.

"Safe space" is a myth used by ideological zealots who don't want to be confronted by reality. It's the equivalent to an ostrick putting it's head in the sand while simultaneously expecting the lion not to eat his backside.

What I think is even more ironic is that these same useful idiots are the ones creating the uproar in the first place that somehow the rest of us are just supposed to go along with.

Sorry, but the First Amendment gives me the right to challenge your premises. And it gives you no right to hide behind false pretenses.

If you are white you of course owe them an apology because you have the original sin of racism. Who's the them? Just about any whining SOB that is not a white male and wants to feel aggrieved at that particular moment.

The problem I'm having with whites is that they won't stand up for themselves or what's right. They apologize for even small infractions, ones that the average person would ignore. All that does is egg on the victimized schmucks. As for "racism," it really should be called "tribalism." Just look at the world, from Cambodia to Rwanda to the Balkans. Even though they look the same, they've found reasons to be complete assholes with each other. It's not race, but tribe. The only reason "race" plays such an important role in the US is because a single "racial" group got the short end of the stick for a period of time, but even then, it wasn't all one way, because there were different races getting it in the shorts over that same period. The main reason it's sticking with blacks is because the media and others keep saying that blacks have a "right" to screw up because of slavery and Jim Crow, and need special handling. However, they conveniently ignore the fact that blacks made more progress during the Jim Crow era on their own, than since the beginning of the "great" society. Blacks are being rewarded for bad behavior. But notice that it's now spreading to thinking, not what you look like, and it's raising its ugly head in the centers of learning, not on the street corner. You can't walk away from this problem, or ignore it. It must be confronted, and beat down, intellectually for sure, and physically if necessary.

You do a handle on the problem. The big gripe I have is that these guilty maggots are busy apologizing for me and pissing away my money on what amounts to reparations. Their speaking for me is similar to Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton speaking for all people of color. While they may represent accurately or shape the attitudes of some, they certainly don't represent all of the people they claim to, as in my experience, many can think for themselves. Some even manage to separate themselves from the Democrat party...the party of slavery, racism, the KKK and Jim Crow.

Busy capitalist whites are not inclined to get involved with other people's trivial imaginings.
Tribalism today is characterized by (among other things) political correctness. Agree with the tribe according to the superstition of the day or you'll be thrown into the volcano.

I think it's an Orwellian way to say making it not "safe" to say certain things..

I never took this seriously until a few weeks ago. I assumed critics of PCness were just bigots frustrated that someone was calling them on their nonsense. Then I read this article: https://www.galtsgulchonline.com/post...

It describes a school newspaper publishing a moderate conservative opinion piece and issuing a groveling retraction saying they should have made the newspaper a "safe space". There is a link to the supposedly controversial article and the retraction.

CG, I say this with the utmost sincerity. I have held out hope for you since the beginning of my time in the gulch. Now if you can find the article that explains to you that it's basically the entire democratic party and about half (or more) of the republicans are the cause of these problems. That of course is with the exception of children's parents, who have been living the good life and turning over their children's education to society. IMHO, parents need to teach their children to understand these problems before they get into the public school system. It is very hard to change what they have been taught.

      Respectfully,

" it's basically the entire democratic party and about half (or more) of the republicans are the cause of these problems"
Since nearly 100% of politicians are in one of the two main parties, this means 75% of the politicians are causing these problems.

IMHO these problems come with the territory of society changing and becoming more open. There's no one villainous group causing it. We don't have many politicians promoting how to integrate these changes without giving up liberty, individualism, and our fundamental values. It's easier to pander. But I don't see them as villains. They're not leaders in this area though. We the people need to be leaders.

"I have held out hope for you since the beginning of my time in the gulch"
I'm hopeful by nature so I similarly hold out hope for you.

To give you more grey hairs, the President of Amherst College refused to implement student-demanded changes to throttle free speech. She was responding to the claim that the college had an "institutional legacy of white supremacy, colonialism, anti-black racism,anti-Latinx racism,anti-Native American racism, anti-Native/indigenous racism, anti-Asian racism,, anti-Middle Eastern racism, heterosexism, cis-sexism, xenophobia, anti-Semitism, ableism, mental health stigma, and classism."

To be honest, I'm not even sure what some of those claims mean!. What is the difference between Native American and Native/indigenous, and WTF is cis-sexism? This is PC gone crazy, and I thought I'd seen it all, but I had more to come.

A woman providing free Yoga classes on a campus in Ottowa, Canada was instructed she had to stop teaching, because the college had received complaints of "cultural appropriation." I had to look that term up. Apparently, not welcoming a different culture's various aspects is "cultural imperialism," and offensive, while adopting an aspect of a different culture is malicious, unworthy theft of that culture's historic behavioral property, called "cultural appropriation," and is also offensive. The goal is obviously to create an ever-restrictive environment where it becomes impossible not to offend someone. I'm inclined to decide not to miss an opportunity to be as offensive as possible, and I'm a pretty easy-going guy.

Given all of the above, is it any surprise Donald Trump is finding support?

My favorite website on this list some more: http://safespacenetwork.tumblr.com/Sa...
My favorites are Dyadism, Binarism, Multiplicity Hate, Otherkin Hate, and Ace Erasure.

I looked up otherkin hate. It's hatred of those who do not identify with the human race.

I solidly agree with avoiding offending people on purpose. But I don't think we need all these names that make it sound like particular rude things are a crime. Making it sound like a crime is dangerous. The good thing is I think it's at its peak, and a backlash is coming.

"I'm inclined to decide not to miss an opportunity to be as offensive as possible, and I'm a pretty easy-going guy."
Then I accuse you of ace erasure!! j/k. I just like saying that.

Don't you see, there's no pleasing these schmucks, no matter what you do. So stop trying. Besides, they need to live up to your standards, not the other way around.

I totally agree. They will always find something to whine about no matter how many concessions are made to their "movement". So, I just go along, being me. Usually with no boundaries on what I say to most folks. If they are offended, so much the better. I don't need them in my life.
I'm too old to put up with PC, so it works for me.
