Tell us: Who is John Galt?

When asked "Who is John Galt?", how do you typically respond? The inventor of the motor? The man who stopped the motor of the world? The best within each of us?

We're looking for the clearest, most concise, answers to help promote the message of Atlas and the film. So Gulch... who exactly is John Galt? Submit a comment on this post with your answer or vote on the answer you think is best. The best answers just might be used on upcoming ASP3 promotional materials and, if your answer is used, you’ll get a special thanks in the credits of the film “Atlas Shrugged: Who is John Galt?”

    John Galt is any man who has the self confidence to view himself and his work as of value not only to himself but also to those whom he produces a product or service for that appreciates quality, dependability, durability and esthetics superior to what anyone else can provide.

    John Galt is the man who loves his life. He is the man who shows us by what moral standards we exist, and he symbolizes that which our world finds to be impractical, contemptuous, and repugnant: the pragmatic egotist.

    Here are a few:

    John Galt is the manifestation of human spirit uninfluenced by the irrational.

    John Galt is a human being no greater than you or I save for his rational exile of fear.

    We live our lives on the continuum between thought and fear; at the first end of this scale lies John Galt.

    John Galt lies at the rational end of the thought-fear continuum we call existence.

    Who Is John Galt? A man who believes no one owes him and he owes no one except for the value either provides to the other. Anything other than that is pure theft, not only of money, but of spirit as well. There is hope, I am John Galt, you are John Galt...

    Since he lives among people, he knows that he must proclaim the right to life as the basis for his very existence. Upon this basis stands the rights of liberty, property, pursuit of happiness and control of hostility. He pursues his life, doing that which he values through consensual agreement and not doing deliberate harm.

    John Galt is the individual within those of us that cherish the free spirit and recognize the value of hard work, determination and perseverance without the need or desire to have someone else do it for us.

    John Galt is a symbol that we have the natural right to choose whom we trade our time or money with, but as a last choice in the absence of such rights, our only recourse may instead be not to trade at all.

    John Galt is the one who states that he exists, that he is himself and that he is conscious. He knows that he exists because of the processes of existence, not because of any human(s). He experiences life and knows that it can be good. This he values and desires to continue. Continued.

    John Galt is a projection of the ideal man; a man of principle; a man for all who seek moral ambition and rational selfishness. An heroic figure created by an artistic, philosophical genius for the purpose of contemplating how man ought to be: forever pursuing and achieving the best within ourselves.

    Who is John Galt?

    John Galt is everyone's self-worth, self-confidence, their self-pride.

    It is what separates me from you, you from them, one from all.

    It is the evolution of the question "what?" into the questions "who?" and "why?"
