Register your drones?

Looks like the government is getting ready to keep track of it's citizens in a new way.. The million or so people with drones (mostly hobbyists) will now have to register them with the FAA for reasons of "Safety".

The prices on these things have really come down, I was thinking of giving my nephew one for Christmas. Not sure I want to put him on a federal watch list though.

I saw this and it bothers me. I have been an RC modeler for years, when I get the free time (not very often). But, these drones are everywhere. I feel like I'm the only guy in my area actually flying a little airplane. All the others are multi-prop, camera toting drones. I think they're pretty cool, but I've never been interested. This registry is really odd, since our own government relies heavily on drones. I remember seeing a police drone checking out my friends and I at the beach a while back. It was spooky.

Yeah, I wonder if those who see these things as a threat ever built a model airplane? Would a RC helicopter count?

I think the real reason they want to regulate these is the cameras, not the hazard they pose to aircraft.
