Give food trucks freedom to operate

From the article: "Earlier this year, government agents showed up at Rafael Lopez’s business unannounced. They told him that he had to shut down immediately, or face up to $2,000 in fines per day. He was devastated — he’d sunk a good chunk of his savings into opening El Bandera Jalisco, a food truck that he operated on private property on Broadway."

The power of government to regulate is justified as the need to protect the public, the customers, and the environment from unscrupulous businesses.
While this protection does exist, it is rare.
The real purpose is to protect existing businesses.

The problem is not so much the payoffs, rake-offs, taxes on monopoly profits, and bribery that can be given by existing business to government regulators, the problem is the attitude of mind of entitlement to protection from competition.

      you forgot the children :)
They have actually done studies that show, the more restaurants in a city block, the better all the restaurants do overall.

Actually kh, that is an important point.
(To put ideals aside in favor of pragmatism- )
I live in a state where each newsagent, pharmacy, and many others are protected by not allowing competitors within hailing distance. Then I went to SE Asia. There you have clusters of PC shops, tailors, motor parts suppliers, jewelers, food stalls,..
Yes this would increase discretionary spending on each as, while you may have to drive or take a bus, you are sure of getting a choice.

The URL couldn't be displayed, but there is no doubt that small businesses are dropping like fall leaves, unable to comply with all the rules, paperwork and taxes. Some don't even get started because the opportunity to get started with a minimal investment and hard work is no longer viable. In the case of two successful businesses, one started by me and one started by my son, would never have been born into the current business climate. The USA, once the pro business capital of the world is fast becoming the most anti-business of the world.

I would found out the specifics of that 300 foot law; ex. from what to what is that 300 ft?-the two closest points or from property to property...if it was the two closest points, was there enough room on the property to move to 301 feet?

It's ashame they wouldn't consider another location...their choice I guess.
