Iranian naval commander threatens US warships, thus the USA

Ok, I'm all for blowing this ass hat out of the water. Mind you, it's not really a diplomatic solution, but I don't think he's sailed into US maritime waters with an olive branch extended. His words would seem to belie that approach.

I would have the USS Ronald Reagan sail into the middle of their flotilla along with all of the support ships plus a few LA class subs, just to make it interesting. Call it a Freedom of the Seas exercise. I would invite the Captain and selected crew members to lunch and show them the radar picture from an Aegis class Cruiser. Then ask them if they have any questions or doubts of our capability to blow their asses back to Iran if they cause an incident.
It will never happen, but I would love to see it

So, why has Iran sent her warship near our coast? Perhaps to test our response in anticipation of another plan of attack, planned for the future, in a year or two when they are really ready with commercial ships outfitted to launch lots of missles and bombs, bombs with EMP capabillities, as necessary.

Then quietly surround the U.S., and simultaneously launch these missles at our largest cities and at our military bases and ships. They'd continue to fire barrage after barrage until we had sunk all their ships, anticipating their own suicide as being expecially pleasururable to their God, Allah.

After which we'd go back and anihillated much of Iran (and perhaps their sacred places in Saudi Arabia).

This is what I anticipate, slightly different from Elan Journo's scheme in his "Winning the Unwinnable War" book. (These writers are from the Ayn Rand Institute.)

Iran has been flexing its naval muscle lately. It has been in the actions against the Somali pirates. It has also been off the coast of Lebanon and Syria the past several months. Flexing it muscles so the Gulf regions knows who to fear when the Great Satan falls to Iranian might.

Personally I would like to see plain English responses to things like this such as β€œThe Iranian Navy is irrelevant and do not constitute much more of a threat than a wooden sailing ship. If they enter our waters we will destroy them, but so long as they are in international waters they are not worth our time.”

But no, we have to be diplomatic and listen to sabre rattling garbage like him.

I admit though, a ship large enough to carry a dirty bomb so close to our coast is a bit concerning.

I don't know the name of the book, but there was a modern military fiction that involved Iran launching a nuke from a container ship parked just outside US waters. It can be done.

Personally, however, I don't know if that would be such a bad thing. The people of this nation are so self-absorbed that it truly will take something spectacular to force them to engage their brains again.

I think the book you are talking about is One Second After by William R Forstchen. It was based on a scientific study of the possibility of an EMP attack on the US. The study was overlooked because it was released the same day as the commission report on 9/11.

Braggadocios nonsense. An annoying little fly that once bites, will be swatted. The action is clearly provocative and we should do many flyovers and shadow them with subs, just to let them know they had better not escalate beyond bravado. If an act of war is inflicted we should reply with total annihilation. I wonder if in this new world of terrorist nations that are acquiring weapons of mass destruction, if the buffer distance of long standing (12 miles territorial) to international waters is sufficient...

The Iranian ship did not cross into our waters so no military response, other than some kind of "reminder", was necessary.

However, if they were to cross that boundary then there's no reason not to sink the ship. If fact, if I were "king" I'd sink the ship and then pretend like it never happened. No announcement to the press, no communiques to the Iranian government, just silence.

We need to be more concerned about a smaller supposedly commercial ship or tug from Iran. Nuclear weapons can be fired from these to hit the coast. Another concern should be sleeper cells that already in the US that have come over the border or let in by illustrious Leader for education. The supreme commander of the Republican Guard has said they are already here. There has been one attack in April of last year on a power plant in Metcalf, Ca where there were almost 200 rounds shot to bring down Silicone Valley. We are doing our best to protect everyone else and not the our homeland.

I'd love to see the U.S.S. R.R. respond aggressively and scare the bejeezus out of the Iranians, but it'll never happen as long as the Whitehouse Wimp is in office.

First Folks; If the Iranians choose to sail to our east or west coasts, as long as they are in international waters it is their right to do so. Now having said that, Do you all understand the logistics involved with maintaining a fleet of ships far away from their home ports. The U.S. Navy are expert at this and have been doing so since before WWII. Englandwe showed them how.
Now, her comes a third world country, who has basicly just gotten into the twentieth century. They have neither the money nor the capabilty of maintaining a fleet of any size far form their home bases.
I toured an Iranian man of war in the late 60's when the Shaw was still the man in power over in Iran. There ships had to pull into Pearl Harbor because they were out of fuel and food and need our help to get back home. Their ships are sloppy as is their crews. They are poorly trained.
The best response to these people is no response, they are of no concequense and should be treated the same way.

Never has the US demonstrated such weakness to a worldwide audience. It is totally expected that any openly anti-US country with any military capabilities take an interest in provoking the US beyond waving the proverbial finger and banter.. After all, the perspective of the US leadership is weak due to political and military inexperience, indecisiveness, and both political and public support is fragmented, is not isolated to radical Muslim leaders....

You don't think the worlds power players enjoy seeing these crazy leaders politically and publicly antagonizing and exploiting the US weakness on a world stage - especially, if there is little chance of retaliation??.

Remember we have narcissistic leadership in the US who refuses to verbally identify or acknowledge terrorism. Also, this same leadership refuses to recognize the remote possibility that there may be people in the world (albeit uneducated) who do not recognize or understand the sheer genius of this philosophy.

I'd give them an escort. Perhaps run a battleship or carrier just in front of them, so that they ride in the wake. Make them bounce around like pinballs.

    Iran:
    "Trust us!"
    "Believe we are peaceful!"
"Oh, we're here, in this public lot, threatening your neck with our knife and crowing about how we can kill you."

Anyone who doesn't see the psychological disconnect in these messages has got a very different mindset from the rest of us.

Let the idiot talk and if Iran is fool enough to actually back up their lunacy. We should gently place all of their ships on the bottom of the ocean and then send in smart bombs targeted at their leaders until their is nothing of their government left.

Then they will either be so disorganized as to be no threat (even verbally) or the remaining people can put forth a reasonable government. Organized by them and not the US. We should then refrain from and refuse to offer any and all forms or assistance.

Where is Jules Verne's submarine when you need it ?! Maybe send out one of the Navies stealth experimental ships with no markings to sink them. What would be great is a unmarked marauder ships (any kind would do) like they had during the two world wars and sink the Iranian ships.

I think this is akin to "carrying a little stick and walking loudly!"
The warship also looks suspiciously like a US Navy surplus vessel.

To add teeth to your second sentence, it could be a false flag staged incident to accomplish a hidden agenda (ours). Watch TerrorStorm 2nd Edition to see what world leaders and their organizations are capable of. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrXgLhkv...

In another post on this discussion, the book "One Second After" was mentioned. Read it to see what could happen if an EMP attack occurs, either from a foreign source or a rigged, self-inflicted attack. Your observation of the US surplus vessel is very astute if it turns out to be true. I've not been in the military so I can't judge your observation. Watch the video then let your mind ponder the likelihood of this being staged.

It would be surprising it it was not a US Navy surplus vessel. Iran used to be a client state of the USA back when the Shah was there. Client states is where all our obelete equipment goes.

Why do so many people here advocate the initiation of force?

If the presence of a Navy near territorial waters is considered force, allowing a "defensive" response, then the US military policing activities throughout the world would justify constant counter attacks by other countries/groups.
    - a good reason why we should curtail 90% of our military activity.

Apparently you haven't been paying attention over the past few decades. It isn't the fact of the presence of a navy off our shores. It is the fact of the presence of a navy from a regime that has a desire to kill us and/or our friends, which is the key characteristic.
