This book is very unique and a great find! I picked up this book because it promised a fantasy story for kids, which is not based on the mythology of the Western world, and I was not disappointed in the least. The author has done an incredible job of blending together the mythology, magical beliefs and ancient teachings of a number of cultures from across the globe, but with a special focus on the culture of the Hawaiian peoples.
The story follows a young boy, Keoni, as he explores his magical homeland, coming in contact with a number of fascinating creatures and ideas along the way. What makes this book really special are the interactive links to artwork, and more information about the various places and ideas described in the book. It truly influences the young reader to learn more, but in a fun, unobtrusive way.
Above all, I really liked the fact that this book carries a strong moral and encourages children to be good, honorable, and patient, and to do the right thing even when the right thing is not the easiest thing to do. During the course of the story, Keoni learns patience, which is a virtue that is nearly lost in our Western culture. Everyone, including our children, wants what they want right now, and I think this book does an excellent job of showing that being patient is a good thing, and not something to be avoided in favor of instant gratification.
I highly recommend this book for both kids and adults! It is a great story, filled with wonderful artwork, and full of very informative content.
