As with all activity on the internet, you will either have to filter / mask your opinions or make a stand on your principles come-what-may. "the private life is dead"

Some time ago, there was a giant outcry because it was "discovered" that the Denver, Colorado police were keeping records on who attended certain political rallies, especially the pro-gun ones.
They were told by the CO Supreme Court that they couldn't do that, and that people had to be notified if their names appeared on the list, and the list then had to be destroyed. [ha!]
Well, as a popular, get the crowd shouting female shooter who spoke at such rallies, I was not surprised to find my name on the list. But look.

I spoke in the winter when I was halfway through chemotherapy. I spoke when we had positive confirmation that the Denver police had snipers up around the venue. I spoke when I had fallen and broken my wrist not 30 minutes before. We taped it with gaffer's tape and I was hard-put to hold up the William Wallace replica sword which I was using as a prop.

In making the decision to do anything, you examine and accept the possible outcomes of the decision. You make the decision, and you go. Some things are worth going for. You just have to decide what you're willing to lose.

This isn't peculiar to social media. When you go out and say or do stuff, people respond to it. If you do something really powerful, like Steve Jobs or Bill Gates, you get many people loving or hating you. If you do not act or speak, you're mostly safe from this.
