Other things to commemorate: On October 10, 1886, the first tailess dress coat for men was introduced at the Tuxedo Club , in New York. Eventually, the "tuxedo" became more popular than tails at formal occasions. Also, the start of the plastics industry happened on October 10, 1870 when John Wesley Hyatt introduced the Celluloid billiard ball to substitute for the more expensive and harder to get ivory ones Stick with me and you'll become king of trivia.
I was there when the Celluloid billiard ball came out and I am pretty sure that was on the 9th at a dinner at the Kings Table Buffet on All You Can Eat Alley Cat Night. Might've been the 10th. I will go through my diary.
My husband was born on October 10th. In a couple of weeks, he will be celebrating one of those landmark birthdays. Thanks for the info concerning the publication date of AS. Maybe I can get him to do a reading from AS at his party. I'm sure that it could do wonders for the lone Socialist/Communist who was invited.
I had been in and out of prison twice by then. I was working on a Cool Hand Luke type road gang when you were born. I used to have to eat lunch, which was some dirt, right of the end of my tarry shovel. So you do know who the greatest all time musician was. Lawrence Welk of course.
ah yes, I grew up in Iowa so it was on in the background Saturday night when we ate dinner at 5pm. Luckily to sooth the savage beast children who ABHORRED LW, Creature feature out of Chicago started at 10:30. I was allowed to stay up. :)
what? really? I was a huge Lon Chaney Jr fan. also Abbott and Costello-shrug. why not? The Mummy-lol but also the othe Mummy and also the original werewolf. and then-fabulous upon fabulous-McGavin in the 70s :))))))
I loved Abbot and Costello when I was a kid, also the 3 Stooges, and of course "Our Gang". Too bad in todays "hyper-politically-correct" age it's hard to find any of these, except maybe on DVD.
I was a big The Day The Earth Stood Still fan. LOVED Abbott & Costello -- "Whose on first." Loved Curly of the 3 Stooges , not Shemp so much when Curly died. As to creatures, The gill man from the Black Lagoon. Brrr. He was one of the few where the sequels were better than the original. The topper was the first two Alien flicks.
My all time favorite were Abbott and Costello. Each time I see again the Who's On First routine I explode in laughter - it was their greatest masterpiece, IMHO. Reminds me of our political campaigns of today.
One of AR's favorite writers was Mickey Spillane. Darren McGavin was the 1st actor to portray Mike Hammer on TV. It was the late 50's and DM could act pretty tough. By the 70's when he played Kolchak he had turned chicken. But he would do anything for the story and pix. He is best remembered as the old man in A Christmas Story and played a villainous newsman in The Natural. Apparently he did not like the role and had his name removed from the credits.
I took an entire college course on detective novels. from one of my mentors, David Morrell. Interesting info on McGavin. thanks. google got a workout from me today
I loved DM's 1st two novels then it seemed to change. The Brotherhood of the Rose and it's sequel were as finely written as The Eiger Sanction. After that there were a few that I didn't enjoy as much. And why did he kill off Rambo in the novel?
