Israel is openly socialist, so why does the United States support them?

I visited Israel in 2013 on a Taglit Birthright Israel trip. This trip is paid for in full by the Israeli Government, and claims to be neutral on political issues. However, the tour guide openly said that he was a socialist and that Israel was attempting to build a "Utopian Society." I talked to the assistant tour guide about the politics of Israel, and he said that, while he couldn't discuss his personal views on political issues, he could state the facts. The facts being that almost all schools in Israel are public, everyone in Israel has State mandated healthcare, and that gambling is illegal in Israel because, according to the government, it would "allow the wealth to unequally change hands." So, back to my question, why does the United States support a socialist country?
'nuff said.
I didn't answer your stated question. Here is my answer in two parts
1. It is the only democracy in the region.
2. It is a committed ally of the United states, The only one in the region.
At the end of WW2 the US and its european allies decided to create Israel by stealing land from its many allies in the region.
Would the US public have approved if Israel had been created from New York, or Missouri, or Georgia, or Texas, or California?
