Let's achieve equality by junking all air conditioning and watch makeup run off feminist faces and hair that droops.
Some clothing may also follow. Me bad dino.

You must have a different crop of feminists in your area. Around here they don't wear makeup, don't dye or even comb their hair, wear utterly shapeless clothes and ugly crocs. Should be in a dictionary as the picture for "frumpy"

Do those feminists also smell bad too?
I live in Alabama where there ain't to much of that lib stuff.
I could go hang out with UAB (University of Alabama at Birmingham) students on the Southside but at age 68 I don't really want to check out what the co-eds are up to.
Bet "co-eds" ain't politically correct no more.
I sure ain't gonna go back to college to look for fruitcakes in the faculty.
Hey, I be writing like a redneck,
Or me am just in my dino mode.

I don't know about that Dino, I give them distance.

Only once have I ever had a satisfying encounter with a feminist and that was back in the late 70s. I was entering an office building in downtown Baton Rouge. Heavy plate glass doors, so being a properly raised southerner, I held the door for the woman coming in behind me. She stopped dead in the doorway and proceeded to berate me for holding the door. Apparently my exercising politeness was offensive and told her she could not open a door herself. She then said she never wanted a man to hold a door for her.

I said "suit yourself" and let the door go. She was promptly knocked down by it. It had the wonderful affect of shutting her up. That was my only satisfying encounter with a feminist.

I wonder if she ever figured out that being offended when someone holds a door that outweighs you is an exercise in stupidity.

That's pretty funny but I never ran into that.
Where I live black and white people will hold a door open for me and vice versa.
Just had a memory jogged. Must have been 1973 when I held a door open for a black girl at Troy State.
One of three white girls exclaimed, "Did you see him open that door for that (n-word)!"
I also recall making a point of grinning at them.
I was fresh out of the Marines and pretty well weaned off the Alabama segregationist viewpoints of the 60s.

Having spent a lot of time in corporate offices I don't believe its possible to get a temperature that agrees with everyone. Men, older women, and women that are satisfied in their relationships usually wear pants. Women that are "available" generally wear less clothing. Often a lot less clothing. The first group complains about it being to warm, the second that it is to cold and the women that have reached menopause complain that it is to hot, and ten minutes later that it is to cold. To make it worse, there is a little thing called the Sun that moves across the sky and warms one side of a building while leaving the opposite side to cool in the shade.

Of course it was only over the course of the last 100 years that people could work within climate control and not even today can everyone claim that advantage.

haha. You may be right, I. I have always been satisfied with Db (except in arguments!) and I wear skirts not pants. Always. Skirts and a light sweater which was easy to put on/remove as I needed. or jacket. Skirts make me feel pretty. :) now, if I'm hiking...

If you worked in an office every day you might wear slacks, or a pant suit. Perhaps to stay warm, or to keep the Wolf's at bay. Hopefully you will never have to.

The next office I work in where the temperature is picked for any of the people it would be the first one.

The only two answers I've ever heard for temperature choice was to save money (warmer) or to keep equipment cool (colder).

I praise Mr. Carrier for first saving lives and equipment and second for making my life easier. that said, not a fan of closed air systems. But never worked in a high rise, so don't know what happens when you throw the windows open lol

Oh, Lordy! I was constantly freezing...I wore sweaters. Had to do so at home also - guess why? My husband felt the heat more than I.

So, since he couldn't cool himself down but I could add more clothing to warm myself...Surprise! That's what I did...just as I did at work.

Wouldn't it actually be sexist if I insisted that the opposite sex raise the temp when they have no means of cooling down?

Can't wait until these women hit 50 or so. Love to know what they think about heat in the winter and air conditioning in the summer then.

Also...if they think it's cold in an office setting...good thing they don't work in a hospital, especially the graveyard shift or OR.

The things people think of to complain about amaze me.

I have lots of agreement with you. I keep a nice blazer with me to put on when the AC gets a bit cool. I often turn the AC on a bit early so that when other people come in they will find the temp comfy.

When I worked graveyard in a hospital lab, I would wear long sleeves, a labcoat, and a sweater on my shoulders to keep warm enough. But the reagents, analyzers and bench tests were at a fine temp for them!

In my main office, I had 5 women and myself. The battle went on summer and winter. Every woman I've ever worked with in a common environment, when chilled will slam the thermostat up--not just 1 or 2 degrees. All the way, thinking (or not) that will make the room warm up faster. Then when I start sweating sitting at my desk and I find the thermostat at 90 degrees, it's "Who signs the paychecks here ladies?" time, and I know I'm going to regret that statement in just a little while. They would always see to that.

The solution--I disconnected the thermostat and put inside a preset unit. They could happily adjust all day long with no change, and I bought each of them a small electric heater they could keep under their desks.

I understand that biology keeps more of their blood at their center than men, but there doesn't seem to be an acceptable middle ground that they agree to. After the disconnected thermostat idea, I kept the office at 72 summer and 75 winter and it seemed fine as long as they had their under desk heaters available.

    Okay...we've heard the feminist view...now, let's hear the male chauvinist's view -

Maybe the men need more cooling because they're working harder!

    Remember...that was a chauvinist's view...not necessarily my own .

I have had to -- chosen to -- learn to live with colder house temps
because of my wife. . she likes the 60s and I like the 70s.
so, after 18 years together, I am fine with the cooler house.
if I want warmth, I add clothing, sit next to the woodstove,
    or cuddle!!! -- j

All I know is that many offices have the temperature set low enough I need a sweater much of the time. It has nothing to do with feminism. So you guys can stop attacking that on at least these grounds.

This is of key interest to ol' Thoritsu, who stored all the heat he will ever need growing up in FL. Now I am never cold. I am not debilitated by heat (come play soccer with me in 95 degree weather). However, I am soggy if the temp is above 75. 70 or less is great. 50 might be time for a sweater if I'm just sitting.

You can only take off so many clothes. If wimpy feminists need it warmer, get a god damn sweater. It is very clear in my mind that setting the office at 75, leave me no PC option; and therefore, THAT is discrimination!

When I get old (er), I sure hope I switch to liking it hot. SOOOOO much easier than liking it cold! Especially in central Europe or Asia, where they think 80 is great.

when I was in Thailand and the weather got down into the 60s,
the locals got out their sweaters and jackets. . we who were
working on the flightline just breathed a sigh of relief in our fatigues!!! -- j

Totally believe it. It was ~50s in Seoul a couple of years ago. I was just wearing a dress shirt and slacks. People on the train wearing puffy winter coats looked at me like I was an alien.

So...put the women in charge of the thermostat and it becomes sexist toward men. One could compromise by putting in a temperature halfway between what the women want and what the men want. That way, no one is happy and an air of discontent permeates the workplace. That's equality for ya.

Because of A/C (heat and cold) we don't really dress for the seasons anymore. We always dress for the perfect Spring day inside the office, mall, or Grocery store.
I usually test my frosticles off in the office. Sorry, but 68, or 70 degrees is too cold. 72-74 I can do. I keep my house at 78 in the summer.

What bugs me is, the temperature ought to be consistent enough during a day that I can dress for it. If I'm going to have to be in 95 degree heat in the afternoon, and thus must dress lightly -- then don't run the air conditioning on the bus in the morning, and chill me to 50 degrees!!!

/Such complaining, sometimes you have to adapt, get a sweater! I worked with computers for several years, and they had to be cool, we servant humans adapted. Men often are required to wear suits, as do some feminists, that can be hot in summer. I see this as just a move toward appeasing the UN enroute to Agenda 21, and no A/C - and accompanying lost jobs.

We really needed to have research to know that women generally like the temperature warmer and men generally like it cooler.

    Can you day "Duh"

Who spent money on that study, likely us tax payers as some favor to some educational institution with a grant for a research project.

If I had to wear a summer weight dress instead of a suit and tie I would be cold, too. Definitely would not like the draft. ;^)
I can't remember any office where the temperature was perfect, but it was a lot better inside than outside most of the time.
Thanks again to Mr Carrier (and to the power generating companies.)

Here in summer I dress for the weather, and have for ages. That means shorts and loose fitting shirt usually ... except when I go shopping (or obviously to business meetings.) Most stores are kept at so much lower temps than I do at home (for reasons of economy as much as comfort) that I have to dress for fall. My friend, Victoria, always has a sweater with her to wear into the store or mall. I do think that body mass has a lot to do with the phenomena being discussed, too.

I was listening to this with a guy in the room, and he said, "I'd love to go to work in a t-shirt instead of a suit. Then I wouldn't be hot during the summer."

Anecdotally, I understand the complaint. I hear it often from women in the various offices where I have worked. As a contractor, I get around. My wife always brings a sweater to her office. But that said, I agree with Techno that the temperature seems never set for anyone's comfort... And as nice as AC is, in old buildings, it just blows mold. Always something...
