A Red Gulch?

While I do not necessarily care for his motives and I am thinking of the incredible potential profits to be had including proximity to the asteroid belt, maybe we need a Red Gulch.

I like his discussion that it might be a private entrepreneur that gets us there.

Anyone interested in a Red Gulch should PM me. The professor in the office next to me is dealing with the logistics of harvesting Martian soil as a source of oxygen. A Mars colony is farther off than most people think.

Two thoughts come to mind: not necessarily connected. The first regards the Martian Chronicles. I read those when I was a kid and some of them quite frankly freaked me out. Though I would be incredibly surprised to find life of any kind on Mars, I still find the prospect of a colony there fascinating to me Sci-Fi inclinations. Until I think back to Alien II, where it is a colony established there seeking asylum that gets destroyed by aliens.

Can we make sure we've got Space Marines when we go there? ;)

The Kim Robinson series: Red Mars, Green Mars, Blue Mars is pretty well backed by hard science but is a novelization of the colonization of Mars and its terraforming to make it more habitable.

I think it's bound to happen eventually but in our lifetime is more likely on a remote region of Earth. I could see it starting as a site for an accelerator program-- keep those kids in the zone moving fast and breaking things in a secluded spot.
