Get Ready To See Michelle Obama's Face Plastered All Over Your Local Subway Sandwich Shop - Fast Food, Government Approved!

I feel really sorry for the franchise owners as they probably don't have a say what corporate HQ is forcing on them.

Social media is deluged with people pledging boycott.

As for me, I really like Subway, but I can't give my money to the Ruling Class Aristocracy of Pull Approved Fast Food.

I wonder if the franchisees can file a class action lawsuit against Corporate HQ.

Way to ruin my appetite... That sack lunch is sounding better all the time. :) Too bad really... as you and RMP have pointed out, why should the franchisee suffer. If I owned one I would not post the ads...

I don't believe this is being mandated by the government, rather it is a business freely choosing to participate in a government propaganda campaign. It is foolish, and sad to see, but not illegal/unethical per se.
That said, I believe that it is going to backfire and be embarrassing if the media actually reports on it. Sales are likely to decline and Subway franchisees are going to suffer. Pity.

You just brought up something I've been pondering. I live in a very small town and I choose to support local businesses when ever possible. My Subway of course is a franchise..do I punish the franchisee by withholding my trade because of something corporate decided that I don't agree with? Yes.

You go into the franchise and talk to the manager or preferably the owner and indicate that you are a past customer but will not be frequenting their business so long as this ad campaign is going on. Enough people do that and the word will get back to corporate fast.
Just boycotting, although it eventually gets the message through, is too indirect. Tell them. They deserve to know.

Gee!! The face of Mickey's wife Minnie plastered all over Subway's Sandwich Shops could prove to be a greater diet incentive to lose weight than Weight
    Watchers!!

I like Subway but I can wait until this is over. I don't want to support them while this campaign is going on. The execs at Subway should know better than to put someone that polarizing in their stores.

Really is a pity, I must say. Subway was one of the last forms of anything resembling fast-food that I can make myself eat. Anybody ever eat at a Blimpies? Waay better and everything is fresh sliced instead of pre-sliced.

"...encourage finicky eaters,,,to eat more of what comes out if the ground..." My dog already exhumes bones and other disgusting stuff. He is not an Obama fan, but I think my cat is.

    Re: Eudaimonia,
Most franchise agreements allow franchisee's to opt out of some marketing programs under certain conditions. The specific caveats of aSubway agreement are unknown to me. Perhaps someone knows a franchisee well and could ask about this matter and post the information.

What qualities her to promote anything, she is a lawyer with no license to practice. If she were promoting how to scam insurance, okay. I cannot see Jackie Kennedy doing anything so low class!
What about the diners, who wants to stare at that face while you are tying to eat. It would give one indigestion. She looks like a football player about to be tackled.
As to her school lunch fiasco, the kids were left so hungry, they could not learn. The schools had to scrap it and feed them enough to keep them going.

ELEANOR? NO SOAP! "Informal chats with First Lady Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt broadcast every Tuesday and Thursday sponsored by Sweetheart Soap.
"First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt addressed the American people as a commercial broadcaster during her years as First Lady. This was a first on several levels. Firstly, the American people had not had this level of access to the First Lady before. This elevated her celebrity status. Although this also brought concerns regarding a potential conflict of interest by getting paid for this activity while performing her functions as First Lady, Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt's philanthropy defused most of those claims.
"Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt viewed her role as First Lady as an educator to the people and public relations officer to her husband's administration. As a result of this, Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt changed American's idea of what the role of a First Lady is."

I admire Michelle Obama. If we agree that the president's spouse should focus on some good cause, the cause of eating right seems like a great one for right our current time. I don't want this to become a slippery slope toward the gov't forcing you to eat right and exercise b/c after all, we're all responsible for the costs of treating the effects of your lifestyle choices. I'm not blaming PPACA, either, b/c many medical costs were socialized before it.

I see the danger of it appearing she's supporting one company that provides most its value in being a restaurant instead of promoting the healthful foods in general. If it doesn't slide down a slippery slope of the First Lady picking restaurants and stores to endorse, I'm okay with it.

A reasonable position. The first lady should, like others before here, be allowed to promote any good cause she wishes, so long as they don't favor any one business over another, there is no quid pro quo or government coercion of any kind... However, it is a bad business decision to introduce a polarizing figure... why alienate a portion of your clients? It is inevitable that politics will be injected into one's sandwich...

I'm not sure if she's polarizing calling for people to eat right and exercise. I know people who are fired up against anything related to President Obama obviously don't like her.

I agree completely about favoring one business over another. She should do promotions that don't mention any particular business. Subway sells pizza. McDonald's sells salads. Personal choice is more important.

My biggest worry is within two years we'll hear serious debate, "We're paying for your heart disease treatments. Should be allowed to be sedentary. If you expect us to pay for it, we expect to see a record of physical activity on your smartphone's or smartwatch's accelerometer. " That's very bad.

I don't have a problem with advocacy. It's just that the way she and her husband, and all those Progressives do it is so smarmy. They tell us what we should do, but then do what the hell ever they want to do.
