Please allow me to disagree with the obvious fun and pleasure of airsoft games. I am an ardent supporter of the Second Amendment and I am vehemently against any gun control (or, rather, people control). I bought a pink Crikett rifle for my daughter's 7th birthday and both of my kids shoot regularly at the range. In fact, I insist on it as part of their schooling. I am also very adamant about gun safety. That's where airsoft and I don't get along. Now, this is just my opinion and please set me straight if I am wrong, but to me, pointing a gun, even if a toy, at someone that you don't really want to shoot, or shouldn't shoot, is just not a great idea. One of the problems that children (and I mean all the way up to their 30's) experience with video games is that they put them into an alternate reality where any screw up can be corrected with the reset button. Likewise with toy guns - where is the line between reality and a game? Besides, there's "muscle memory" -- if the kids are taught from day one that a gun must not be pointed at anything that you don't intend to destroy, the likelihood of an accident will be greatly reduced. Why not, instead, get them real guns, take them to the range (or hunting) and under supervision teach them to respect and appreciate the weapon that they hold?

Interestingly, I had this discussion with my husband. And then we had it very seriously with our kids.

There are rules for the use of them, and when I take my son to the Airsoft range, they also enforce the safety of the use and handling. If they see anyone fooling around by pointing a gun at any player after a stop siren has rung, they're ejected. Same goes for any shots out of the torso area.

We also take our kids to the range, and again, emphasis is safety and the fact that these are indeed weapons, and not toys. My husband had our daughter at the range on Monday, as a matter of fact. We have drilled it into their heads. I trust them to act responsibly. They also have no access to our actual firearms. Locked in a huge gun safe. Always. So they learn from us, and that's my job.

You can really run full-on scenarios with these, especially if you get one that is a copy of your carry or home defense gun. I have this birthday coming up.......
