Reverse Engineering Chinese Phone Chip

Easier to innovate in China than in the US? Reverse Engineering OK for concepts?

The technical aspects of this process are beyond me (though some of the folks here will love them), but I thought that this was a good example of an innovation/theft dichotomy...and I am not actually sure which side it is on.

What do you think?

This is a very interesting article and in an area that I am also fascinated by. I believe that all parties could benefit by suitable levels of greater openness in many areas of IP. Suitable in the author's case might be use of the better chip sets with full information on their capabilities and integration in exchange for equity and other arrangements for the resulting innovations and products. Looks like a plausible win-win to me.

What makes little sense is completely hamstringing local underfunded innovators with IP while publishing the patents that tie their hands which are quite freely copied and used as product basis in some other countries.

The legal term is patent infringement. the second reason is the guy in the oval office or somewhere near that level giving away the proprietor information needed, the third is the level of education and skills available there versus here, the fourth is the US Patent Office rules on publishing prior to issuing the patent....

In reverse? I suspect there would be a complaint filed with the State Department.
