It is an interesting study of TJ, as a president he tried to avoid war through any means he had. I am reading a book on the history of the War of 1812, by George C. Daughan, TJ had a vision of an agrarian nation, not a manufacturing one, and there was a real schism between the Democrats and Federalsits. Also, no one seemed to concerned with just how they planned to defend their freedom, and the War of 1812 was a whole lot of debacles (with a few shining examples of individual brilliance and courage) the illustrate a pattern we continue to see today. Amazing how much stays the same, just the names change.

I agree with Jefferson on war. Nothing is more stupid than to carry out an all out war. Counter punches that leave a severe mark are ok and repeated until the attack stops are sufficient to protect our freedom. Vanquishing the enemy comes at too high a price to humanity. Capturing combatants or territory bears too much responsibility.

I thought the whole way TJ and Madison waged the War of 1812 was instructive on just how hard it is to do. Everything they expected failed, they had no money, they strangled their main source of income (excise taxes on exports/imports) and in the end, it all didn't matter, as the whole question was impressment which Britain ended with the fall of Napoleon. Not much happened except Washington got renovated ( and a really bad storm smacked the British right after they burned it, kinda poetic). You are correct in the assertion that war in and of itself is self defeating, even the victor ends up losing, look at how much the US spent post WW2. A good tactical strike capability and the proof you will use it seems a better deterrent.
