Galt's Gulch Technical Details
This post stems from a topic that began in another post, but was perhaps a distraction to that important post.
People were mentioning PM's and I had no idea what that was. Now I do. The topic came up as to if there were other functions of the site that were worth exploring. And I do have questions.
The thumb up/thumbs down feature. Are there guidelines as to how to use the feature? Particularly if a post got seriously downgraded - what happens? I've seen some posts mentioning lurkers that are downgrading posts. How anonymous is it?
And how does points work? Is that different than just the number of posts one has made?
In the members area, one of the pieces of information included is distance. Distance from?
And some of the features with each post. What is gained by "Mark as Read", and "Flag", and Permalink?
Thanks in advance. As an old Ayn Rand acolyte from back to the 60's, it is great to see where it is all at these days.
I selected Education as the category figuring that is what I'll get.

RE: "Particularly if a post got seriously downgraded - what happens?"
If a post goes below -5, it will be automatically "hidden." Comments are also ordered by highest votes to lowest.
RE: "How anonymous is it?"
Downvoting is completely anonymous. However, only Producers or members with over 100 points can vote.
RE: "And how does points work? Is that different than just the number of posts one has made?"
Every time you post, you get 1 point. 1 post = 1 point. Whenever other eligible members vote on your post, your point total is affected. 1 post = 1 point; 3 upvotes + 2 downvote would then raise the post total point value to 2 (1 + 3 - 2).
RE: "In the members area, one of the pieces of information included is distance. Distance from? "
Distance from you (either your nearest ISP hub or your zip code if provided).
RE: "What is gained by "Mark as Read", and "Flag", and Permalink?"
- "Mark as Read" is a way for you to simply dim a comment so that the next time you visit the thread, you'll know which comments you've read.
- "Flag" send an email to the Gulch admins. You 'll want to use this if you see someone spamming the site or "trolling."
- "Permalink" provides a direct URL to a specific comment. For instance, if you want to send me a PM to read a comment, you would send me the Permalink so I could click on it and be taken directly to the comment.
First, Your answers were so concise I think they should be added to the FAQ's.
Second, I would suggest adding a FAQ tab to the top menu bar. I remember at first when I stumbled into the Gulch it was a bit confusing until I discovered the FAQ link at the bottom of the page. Having it at the top would be friendlier to new people.
Thank you for the great comment.
So, another question. How is a troll recognized? What are indicative behaviors?
And I take it a troll is someone entering into the forum with the intention of disreputing its general goal?
My first exposure to Aynn Rand was at a social gathering at a small condo in Tiburon Ca. around 1970. I had been asked to tag along with a friend of mine who thought I would be interested. And I was interested, but it seems they weren’t that interested in me. They were having a party later and I was not invited, according to my friend the host felt I was not the “right type” Referring to my self-educated status and not inclusive of business acumen. To me those attending this Aynn Rand social event appeared more interested in how their conversation sounded than what it communicated. For my part I wasn’t interested in talking about the philosophy of living large, I was busy doing it. Nonetheless through the BS filtered enough about Aynn Rand to pique my interest. So I went to the source, read her books, checked up on her ideas, and fell dead in love with her.
Just recently I was reminded of that 1970’s historical party. I went to my attorney / business partner with a well thought out legal position. Part way through my theoretical justifications I observed him in pantomime masturbation or elsewise stated… He was doing the crazy hand jive motion with his hand. He then told me, “George, it is important in life not to believe your own lies.” And ‘that’ reminded me of my first and last Aynn Rand social gathering.
or rationality here -- I have 3 degrees and my wife
has none; we get along very well, as do the great
folks here in the gulch!!! -- j
a post which I was about to make contained vile
language (in a video). . not a troll, but out-of-bounds. I cancelled the post. -- j
So, another question. What are the indications of a troll? How does one recognize a pattern?
I take it a troll is someone coming into the forum with intentions of disrupting its general goals?
In the members are the distance is how far that member is from your current location.
"Mark as Read is a new feature that fades the comment so you know you have read it. Helps you to keep up with long posts.
The "flag" feature is used for abusive content. If you find a comment with racist or vile remarks you can flag it and administration is alerted immediately.
The permalink feature gives you a direct link to a comment.

I would like to have a way I could find all of the comments posted by a particular individual (not just the threads they began). There are some folks whose input is almost always interesting to me, and if I am short on time I could browse thru their comments.

Thanks.

Jan, not particular about spelling, "Yay"
its hypocrites. It is sad that some people place
their snobbery above actually living the philosophy
and true dedication to the cause.
