Personally, I'm not sure it's such a good idea. A voluntary military seems like it would have higher moral than a military of people who don't want to be there and who didn't have a choice.
Constitutionally, there's some supporting thought to the idea, if and only if the founder's disgust for a standing army is restored. At that point, all able-bodied men were in the state militia and were under the control of officers of the state subject to call up, as the state's militia for defense of the country, much as Israel or Sweden.
But to do so, we'd have to give up the idea of policing the world.
This is statism dressed up as patriotism. Government is force. I don't know how to be more concise. They aren't getting my kids. I come from a long line of men who have served. Look how well that turned out... Statism dressed up as patriotism. Hell, at Fort Hood they just found the guy in charge of taking care of sexual assault victims trying to recruit the women into prostitution. Yeah...good luck with that...bunch of friggin idiots. The young lady who grew up across the street from me is counting the days until she's out of the Army. She's constantly being sexually harassed. You bet the left wants this for all the kids.
I think they have put in provisions in the Dream Act that encouraged enlisting to receive citizenship quicker. I think you are right that Obama had at one time wanted to have a policy for young people to serve in some capacity. Do you really think the Dems could get back the congress in 2014? They are more likely to also lose the Senate. There is more fun ahead for this health care fiasco. Come January, Obamacare will have to actually start providing medical services through the insurance people have signed up for. There weren’t enough doctors in the system that took medicaid or medicare before.Nothing in this new law has done anything to change that. Now there will be millions of more people lined up for free care in a system that was barely working. Popcorn, please. I’m here for show. Anyway, I think Congress is not up for grabs for the Dems.
It’s an opinion piece. He gave his opinion. I don’t agree with it, but I think there is something to be said about how few of those currently serving in the House and the Senate have ever really served our country. He might have hit the nail on the head of how our politics got so bi-partisan. The congress, while always capable of days on end of in-house bickering, has been made up of men who at the end of the day could go have dinner together. The sense of fellowship is gone. Might be a good idea in the future to point out how important it is that a candidate have some experience in the military, unless of course, we are determined to fill all the seats with ‘community organizers’.
But to do so, we'd have to give up the idea of policing the world.

If the Democrats regain control of Congress in 2014, it could still happen.
If memory serves, I think it was one of Teddy's dreams.
