    Not even “Death and taxes” are settled!

    The speed of light? Possibly.

    The law of gravity? Probably.

    I completely agree with the teacher's reasons for not using class time to debate gay rights: it's offensive to some students and it's already settled. There are many topics like homeopathy and an earth-centric model of the solar system that do not deserve any debate time.

    That being said, people in an academic environment must be free to criticize one another.

    So I too would disallow debate about gay rights in class, but I would be open to criticism. If I say I shouldn't have to face criticism, it makes it look like I don't think my ideas stand up to criticism. Criticism is necessary.
