Holiday dinner

Whatever winter holiday you celebrate, I wish you a wonderful one!
Part of what makes it wonderful is what you eat and drink - so, what's everybody having for dinner? I'm in charge of wine at our first family gathering [actually, the Wizard is]. I think what I really am in charge of, after irreverence, is cookies and other treats. Everyone is my family gets the same present - a special Christmas tree ornament, and a selection of goodies. So far, I've done the fudge [black walnut and plain] and the fruitcake - next come the ginger/spice cookies and the nut bars.
I like consumable presents - you don't end up with your family's idea of what you like.
ALTHOUGH, this year, everyone is getting a cheap flash drive with a couple of scenes from AS3 on it.
other wonderful plans?

    The local grocery store is BBQing Tri-Tip on Christmas Eve day, so I'll get some of that. Probably Scalloped potatoes, Asparagus, maybe cranberries, so kind of yet to be determined pie and a guest appearance by Captain Morgan.

    I've become the cook for holidays, for the most part, as our house has become the meeting place for family. I wouldn't want it any other way. I open a bottle of wine by late morning (haha), get in the kitchen and get busy. For Christmas I'm cooking a dish I haven't made for years, but love - salmon in puff pastry. It's an Emeril recipe. Check it out.

      I think puff pastry is one of those things that improves almost anything you put into it - we have a recipe for a mushroom-stuffed filet in filo that is REALLY good. I think of filo as do-it-yourself-on-the-spot puff pastry.

          ok, I do truly only kinda read kitchen French, so I actually got a lot of that [and it looked yummy] but I didn't get the filo part. Was it virtual filo? [That's when I say "we" cooked dinner, but the Wizard is really the only one of us who can make filo behave - so my part of the dinner was a bunch of the rest of it, and "gee, I'm glad you're the one reasoning calmly with the filo, and not me. dear."
          or did I fast forward too fast and not see it?

            Oh. Yes you form the filo over small pyrex bowl and bake . Then you fill the "bowls" with the scallops mixture and top with parmesan and broil until the cheese is bubbly. When my sister in law makes it, somehow the whole bottle of vermouth is incorporated as she tells a good story or two and you 're enjoying a nice white wine together.

    I bet I know which scenes :) Both my children, Kira and Aristo are coming into the Gulch. Aristo was in a car accident this morning on his way to the airport. Totaled his car. But he was ok and was not at fault. but we're all still a little shaky here.
