Good afternoon friend,
Yesterday, the General Assembly's Commerce Committee made a wise decision by stopping a bill that would add a tax to home heating oil.
The bill, H.B. 6650, An Act Concerning Energy Efficiency, would have established a heating fuel tax to provide funding for the implementation of cost-effective energy conservation programs, and require any furnaces or boilers to be Energy Star compliant in order to qualify for the residential heating equipment financing program.
This controversial bill was declared "dead" by the committee co-chairs, citing a staggering economy and public outcry by the oil companies -- many of them local, small business owners.
I'd agree. Right now, the last thing Connecticut residents and business owners need is another tax. Many of our neighbors and friends are struggling and this tax would have created one more reason for them to flee the state, or fall behind on their bills.
As a member of the Finance, Revenue & Bonding Committee, I've witnessed first-hand the way this state is trying to spend its money. And I haven't been very pleased. This tax would have created a fund designed for cost-effective programs, but given the legislature and Gov. Malloy's history with spending money, I'm not sure that fund would have been safe for its designed purpose.
I think we can breathe a small sigh of relief after hearing about the "death" of this controversial bill. We still have a lot of work to do in Hartford, but seeing this bill die in committee means one less tax you and I would have to pay.
I'd encourage you, as always, to stay engaged with the legislative process. Our state and our government is dependent upon our citizenry. I'm here to serve you. If you have any questions or comments, on any upcoming legislative proposal or otherwise, please don't hesitate to contact my office. The information is listed on the left of this email.
Have a safe and enjoyable weekend.
Respectfully yours,
Cecilia
