Michael Crichton has a great book that analyzes peoples apparent need to generate crisis from nothing in "State of Fear".

The book was used by a Senator to bring up the issue, to which Al Gore's response was to use a straw man argument, "Well, I read a science fiction novel that tells me it's not a problem".
Yes. I read it. Good book. Please keep promoting it. I know I will.
Respectfully,
O.A.
Another part sci-fi writer, part engineer James Hogan also wrote non-fiction book, Kicking the Sacred Cow. In it he debunks about 10 'scientific' issues including GW, the Big Bang, and DDT.
Too bad both writers died relatively young.
