And...Inflation May Be Pushing me Back Into The Gulch

Just got the bill for a minor repair on the fireplace at a rental of mine and to repair the gate. $1900. Since it's proving to be the best hedge on inflation I've ever owned I'm threatening to buy another rental. Was just in a meeting with one of my company's accounting managers to discuss billing on some projects I'm working on and I was very candid about it. If the price of stuff keeps doing what it's doing and I buy another rental I'll have to quit my professional work and just acquire a few more tools and become a full-time caretaker of some rentals...fixing stuff myself. I think a major component of this problem is the cost of labor. If you can find somebody with an IQ approaching 3 digits and who's willing to climb a ladder and turn a screwdriver you can charge an arm and a leg for them. Ultimately, over time I can see that I could end up selling everything else. Just have an old pickup with tools, a rusty bicycle, and a fridge with beer in it. That'd round out my Gulch. Show no earned income. The cost of just maintaining decent stuff, let alone acquiring it, is becoming what I refer to as "a material fact". Can no longer be ignored. I almost can't make enough in my job designing top-of-the-line medical facilities to pay for a guy to climb a ladder with a hammer. Something's going on here...

I think we're getting to the point where "working for the man" (not being self-employed and/or business owner) is an absolute non-starter. It will be a massive blow to the American middle-class if I'm right.

Another problem I have is that I'm no longer willing to put in 55 hour weeks in my day job. I noticed that young engineers in their 20s taking a leave of absence for stress/fatigue is not uncommon anymore...let alone just quitting the work altogether. I left my Gulch only to work at an hourly rate. A "salary" probably would have been my death...haha....

IMHO, the age of the guy "with an IQ approaching 3 digits and who's willing to climb a ladder and turn a screwdriver" may also be more than halfway to 3 digits and there aren't as many around. If you want 'em, you have to pay for 'em. If the money isn't there, neither are they. I'm used to fixing my own stuff, but I'm getting to the point I'm doing it less and less and finding people that can with quality is getting more challenging.

So what do you reckon the something is?

As I mentioned here...I'm picking my way through the book "The Indoctrinated Brain". I only really make time to read it when I'm on a jet liner...so spotty. But, in watching recent videos of people being arrested for felonies for vandalizing Teslas and cars that have Trump/MAGA stickers I'm seeing a very high level of insane, almost demonic behavior. Saw one clip of a young guy cutting off a 60-something year old woman driving a Tesla and beating her up. There's surely something going on with American brains. It's unsustainable and unless the authorities take it seriously it may escalate into worse. That's the mental health facet. The other facet is ALL THIS fraud and government debt that has gone wildly out of control. It has devalued the dollar severely and it's really not being reported much in the news. But, everybody I know is griping about the price of things. It's the 300-pound gorilla in the room.

So, we're financially in trouble and don't have the mental wherewithal to address it. Probably how empires collapse, right?...
