Australia’s Wild, Draconian New Speech Law Targeting ‘Misinformation’

Excerpt:
"Australia and New Zealand are, with the possible exception of Canada, the furthest down the totalitarian rabbit hole of all Western nations.

I have no idea what made these people so docile in the face of brutal government overreach, but I assume it has to have something to do with the relative peace and security on the continent over the years.

As if they weren’t put-upon enough, “misinformation” on social media is now defined and banned in Australia’s legal canon.

Via Crypto Slate (emphasis added):

“Australia’s Communications Legislation Amendment (Combatting Misinformation and Disinformation) Bill 2024 continues to ignite heated debate, with critics arguing that the bill risks stifling free speech.

The proposed bill, which targets misinformation related to elections, public health, and critical infrastructure, requires tech companies to establish codes of conduct.

Platforms failing to self-regulate will face standards imposed by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), which would oversee enforcement. This could include fines of up to 5% of total global revenue for platforms that fail to comply with the new rules.

However, free speech advocates warn that this could have a chilling effect on legitimate public discourse and potentially limit people’s ability to criticize public institutions.”"

The first question that pops into my head is "who gets to decide". With so much 'misinformation' later turning out to be true, I would not trust anyone other than myself to judge.

Whenever I a claim of something being 'mis/dis-info', I immediately remember my preferred definition:

Misinformation is not necessarily FALSE info [or they would just call it that!] Misinfo is something THEY DON'T WANT YOU TO HEAR!

Remember during the Seventies especially when Carter was in office, people~~all of them white~~ saying they either wanted to move or were going to move to Australia.
During the Eighties Crocodile Dundee in a sequel was using a rifle back home in Australia.
    Times change.
Times have also been changing D.E.I. for the Yoke of the WOKE having women not knowing what women are right here.
Hey, groomed boys and girls, go strip and look at a full length mirror to see what you really are!
The dino be tired of all the stupid Schiff! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ed2dJ...

Years ago, my wife and I planned to vacation in Australia when our kids were born, so that they would have dual citizenship in case things went to hell here. We ended up not being able to afford it, and we're glad now. Sorry to see. I love the UK and have friends there, but they (as well as the rest of Europe and the UN) all seriously need to implement our First Amendment.

When our destroyer pulled into Brisbane and Sydney in the late '60s, I thought to myself that I ever moved out of the US, this would be a good place to go. Of course I thought the same thing about SoCal when I was home ported in Long Beach. Look how that turned out. Ouch.

Exactly. I took my boy to Disneyland and Yosemite twenty years ago, so he could see things that made an impression on me when I lived there at that age, in the '60's. We ate dinner on the Queen Mary in Long Beach. There's no way I'm going back there now.

Yes, and the Aussies are utterly clueless about it.
When I lived in Oz for a couple years, I was constantly having to explain the real reason for the 2nd amendment.
Aussies are completely brainwashed against firearms.
Many are perfectly happy to be dependent on government 'experts.'

Note my comments are on many, not all Australians, but based on my experience
it appears to be a significant majority who oppose firearm ownership except for
        ownership by armed government agents.

One of the curses of Australia has been wowsers -prudes and busybodies of both Right and Left. The only thing wrong with the old Australia was the rigid censorship. Wowsers are a bigger pest than rabbits!

Just a few years back, when I was visiting New Zealand, a number of times people there took me aside to tell me they admired Donald Trump and wished they had someone like him. It was sad, because it seemed like they were afraid of being heard.

I understand. I lived in NZ for about 18 months in ~2011-2012 and the government oppression was growing even then. They let kim dotcom in as a resident because he had money, and now they want to throw him out because he resisted the dictates of the US in his online business. He doesn't even own the business now, but it doesn't matter to the D.C. scum and their hired jackboots in allied countries.

These are the same Aussies who allowed themselves to be put in Covid concentration camps.
They're docile, and have no defense against government overreach.
That's why they're so far down the totalitarian rabbit hole.

I'm friends with a few Aussies here since they are heavy in the mining industry. They are great people. Upbeat. Smiling. Always positive. But, when it comes to this stuff they, literally, have zero answer. No comment at all. They just quietly stare at the ground. It makes me very sad, to be honest... At least express disappointment. Maybe even a tinge of anger(?) Nope. Nothing...
